10 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN PORTLAND LEGION Rideau Lakes Branch 231 held a regular meeting on Oct. lst. A new associate member, Ron Welch, was initiated and welcomed into the branch. The annual Remembrance Day services will be held at Elgin 1:30 p.m. and Portland 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8th. It is hoped to have a band this year. If so, the parade will form up at the Elgin Fire Hall at 1:00 p.m. and at Portland United Church parking lot at 2:00 p.m. and march to the cenotaphs for service at the stated times. All veterans are invited to participate. Legion dress and medals should be worn, where applicable. Following the services an open house will be held at the Portland Community Hall. Everyone is invited to share a lunch and social hour. Let us pause for a few moments to think reverently of those who by sea, by land and in the air, laid down their lives for their Sovereign and Country. The annual Harvest Dinner held on Oct. 17th was well attended. Everyone had high praise for the super dinner provided by the Ladies Auxiliary. There were several out of town visitors at the dinner. One such visitor came looking for Lint McConville. He was Mr. Lloyd Vanoider, a neighbour and school friend of Lint in the Glendale area back in the 1930's. The last time they met was in 1946 at a reception for returned veterans of the Kingston area. Lint moved to Portland in 1955 and Lloyd to Perth in 1955 and they didn't know that they were so close. A happy reunion. Yes, it is a small world. A Halloween dance will be held on Oct. 31$t.
