NORTH LEEDS LANTERN DELTA UNITED CHURCH lOOTH ANNIVERSARY Even before 1888, the date Delta United Church's corner stone was laid, there were concerned people who reached out to Kingston for ministers who came on horseback to conduct services, intermittently in the schoolhouse. Thirty-four years later a Methodist Society was formed in Delta by the Rev. James Bell and in 1862, when the first brick church was built, he became the minister on this circuit. In 1887 plans were made to build the present church and the following trustees were appointed: James A. Bell, Anson Coleman, Albert Hicock, Edward Pierce, John Russell and Alex Stevens. Following the laying of the corner stone, on June 19, 1887 dinner was served by the ladies of the church, in Denaut's Grove. The Delta Brass Band played several selections. Now, one hundred years later, descendants of these worthy people, as .well as newcomers to the area, continue to worship and work â€" to God be the glory. To celebrate our 100th Anniversary, we plan a number of services and activities to highlight the dedication and courage of these faithful Methodists. On March 17th, a St. Patrick's Tea will be held in Delta United Church Hall from 2-4 p.m. Irma Chant and Lorna Pearson are in charge of this event. Betty Kitson, with the help of the Sunday School, will prepare a float for the Mznle Syrup Festival Parade, alsC the Delta Fair Parade. Or Easter Sunday, a Sunrise Service, Pancake breakfast and regular service will be celebrated. On Mother's Day, May 8, the Sunday School, teachers and pupils, will conduct the church service. On June 19 our Anniversary Dinner will be held. Former ministers and their wives and former members of the church who have moved away will be invited. The publicity will be handled by Hilda and Harold Cardiff. A scrapbock recording this year's activities is the responsibility of Isabel Robert, as well as the table at the Maple Syrup Festival; all clippings and pictures will be welcomed. The Rev. Glen Stewart is our advisor. Pulpit exchanges between former ministers, not too distant, and our minister are planned. " DELTA DATA" On a sunny, pleasant winter's day, President Irma welcomed everyone at the Manse, with Joen Stewart being the hostess.A short poem entitled Love was then read. Betty Henderson Opened the worship with hymn More Love to Thee. Scriptures were taken from John 3.l6 and Cor. 9.l5 She then read an interesting and appropriate Valentine's Day poem. The offering was received and dedicated. I travelled on my knees was then read Roll call answered by our members stated that l4 home and 22 hOSpital visits had been made. Fun project was then collected. Minutes of the last meeting were read and accepted, as was the Treasurer's report which was done by Irene Goodsell. With business being concluded Vivian read about Canada‘s Farms and Fisheries where Hope once sprang Eternal. These stories about central, eastern and western provinces depicted their hardships and changes which have taken place over the years. ReSponsive reading of scriptures pertaining to love was done, followed with this reading: If. any little word of mine Can make a heart the lighter If any little song of mine Can make a life the brighter, Lord, let me speak that little word. And take my bit of singing And dr0p it in some lonely vale And set the echos ringing. The Lord's Prayer was then repeated. To end a lovely afternoon Joen served the ladies a very tasy Valentine‘s Day lunch.Irene then the courtesy. gave Paul Dunlap Hearing Aid Service 283-7421 The Family Medical Centre II 13 William St. N Box 1136 Smiths Falls, Ont.
