6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN MN Elgin 8 District Coâ€"Operative Nursery School The little ones who attend the Nursery School found many ways to enjoy the month of December. Appropriate to the Christmas theme. the children. assisted'by their teacher. Jane Kimmerly and her assistant Barb Neff.. made numerous Christmas ornaments. that brightly decorated the classroom walls. Projects included strings of popcorn and cranberries. paper plate wreaths. smiling angels and paper christmas stockings. some of which cheerfully dressed the beautiful Christmas tree. which was generously provided by John Kenney. Fine winter weather on one day allowed the children to play outside and enjoy creating angels and snowmen in the fresh snow. On December IS. a Christmas party was held with the spirit of the season running high. Much to the children's delight. a surprise visit from the jolly old fellow in the red suit was the highlight of the festivities. A large array of nutritious snacks was enjoyed by children and parents alike â€" all in all. a happy end to lQEl7. Since their return from the Christmas break. the children have been exploring a variety of themes with Jane B Barb's guidance and encouragement. "Pets" was a favourite topic with the children. allowing them to share pictures and stories of family pets with each other. The little ones have also enjoyed learning and participating in Nursery rhymes at Circle Time. "Transportation" was another theme highlighted this month. with the children discussing classifications of water. land and air. Crafts this month have included paper bag puppets. clothespin airplanes. string painting. Miss MUPPEt'S spider and many more. 8” pertaining to the various themes. Thanks to parental and community support. the Nursery School enjoyed a successful day at the Rideau Crafts Market. The lucky winners of the November 29 raffle were: Hand Quilted Clock â€" Brys Scovil. Portland and the Christmas Gingerbread House went home with 2": year old Jacqueline Bonner of Westport. The "Pay What You Pull" raffle prize of $l00. cash was won by John Arno of Kanata. All of these fundraising projects brought us desperately needed funds and our sincere thanks go to all of you who supported us in these endeavours. In a constant effort to provide financial assistance to the Nursery School program. the co-operative is sponsoring a Mr. Bingo. on February 8. in Kingston. ELGIN Elgin uow The December meeting began with a worship service in the church led by lrene Guthrie's group. The ladies of the Fellowship Circle took part in the service which told of the symbolic meaning of the Christmas tree. the holly or holy bush and the ivy. After. the Fellowship Circle left for a short while and the President of the UCW introduced the business side of the meeting and the names of the IQBB officers were read. Then came the time for fun! Each person gave their gift to their Secret Pal and when the Fellowship Circle joined all the ladies went downstairs and enjoyed a delightful time of refreshments. Elgin UCW Retiring president Loree Smith opened the first meeting of the new year with a prayer and an appropriate message. Nina Churchill's group centred on the New Year with interesting readings by Nina. Anna Smith and a Scripture reading by Marion Kitson. Offerings were taken and dedicated by Mary Carbino and the worship service ended with the singing of Hymn "For Thy Mercy and Thy Grace" with Loree reading from the Psalms between each verse. Minutes were read by secretary. Sandra Freeman and the Roll Call recorded 26 members in attendance. Details of the years work and activities were discussed and Loree read a letter from the Township of South Crosby thanking us for the food parcels donated for the needy of the district. The Presbyterial General Meeting will be held in Lyn United Church on Feb. 23. commencing at 9 am. On March 3 the United Church Moderator. Mrs. Anne Squires will be in Dlivet United Church and on March l-l the "World Day of Prayer" will be in the Catholic Church in Elgin. Enid Soper read the Treasurer's report. Eleanor Taylor gave a report on the Social Activities. as did Vieta Willows and Lorene Hayes concerning their work in the Flower Fund and the sending of cards to the sick. Shirley Bryden gave a report for the suggested repairs and alterations for the Manse. Loree concluded the business section of the meeting with readings from Corinthians. In the absence of our Minister. Rev. Harry Seeley who is at this time recovering In hospital from an unfortunate accident, our Pastoral Associate Cheryl Battams took over and installed the new officers. Shirley Bryden as President. Sandra Freeman and Marjorie Earl as lst and 2nd Vice President. Lydia Tackaberry as Secretary and Enid Soper as Treasurer. Prayers were said for the Rev. Harry's speedy recovery. Marjorie Earl concluded with the reading of an article entitled "THe Church" the theme of which was "Why do we go to Church?" Lunch and an enjoyable social hour was supplied by Anna Charland's group.
