24 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN AIDS education and information continues to be important for students and the whole community. To assist with this, Joan Kennedy, a physical education teacher at the school, and Susan Torrible, our health nurse, will present information includ- ing a visual presentation, ~to parents and the general public at the high school on Tuesday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m,. It is hoped that there will be many interested people in attendance. The Law class, with teacher , Arlie Hughes , continues to hear from interesting visitors. Constable Paul Arnold of the Vestport 0.P.P. spoke to the class about rights and responsibilities when involved in or witnessing a crime. Two prison inmates spoke of their life in prison. They spoke of the rules and regulations and the constant routines. One, who is now out of prison, told of work being done to try to help ex inmates get their life back together. Lawyer, Jane Monoghan spoke to the class on a variety of topics such as being a tenant , changing one's name, especially in marriage , and names of children. Recently, Constable Don Killens of the Perth 0.P.P., visited the class with his dog, Euchre. Euchre is trained to track people. A demonstration was performed for the class. Euchre is about to be trained as well for narcotic control. Our Student Council Executive election for 1988â€"89 was held on Tuesday, May 3rd, with students being nominated to fill four positions. Dwayne Adams (elected President), Gary Bracken, Cindy French, Hilary Hawkins, Laura McEwen (elected Treasurer), Scott Rice, Jennifer Roit (elected Secretary) and Steve Visser (elected campaign which culminated with individual speeches being made at an allâ€"student assembly. Congratulations. Positions of Social Convener, Publicity Director, Boys Athletic Representative and Girls Athletic Representative, together with Grade Reps., will be voted for later this month. May 19, 1988 Another L.G.S.S.A. championship has come to Rideau. Coach Bob Chittick reports that the Junior Girls' soccer team captured the trophy for the second year in a row on Wednesday, May 18. Rideau defeated South Grenville by a score of 3 ' - 0 with goals being scored by Karen Laming (Z) and Mary Skoryna for one. The shutout was registered by Mary Ellen Pattinson. At the time of writing the Senior Girls' are playing in their final against B.C.I. The trip to the U.S.S.R. was a huge success. Students and staff who went, together with Michael Lea from the Whig Standard, will make a presentation at R.D.H.S. on Thursday, May 31, in the gymnasium beginning at 8:00 p.m. The welcome offered the Rideau contingent was quite overwhelming. The most gratifying sight was the ease with which students from the two countries were able to mingle and make friends. The Canadians were also treated to the best seats in the house for a circus in Denetsk, a prominent place in the Victory Day Ceremonies and a seat in the Czar's box in Leningrad to view an opera. Daniel Bilton, John Craig, Cathy Keates, Clark Evans and Scott Trowbridge deserve our congratulations. They all made the honour roll in the eastern region of the Canadian Mathematics competitions this year. Dan Bilton came fourth among the grade nines in our counties.
