Now is the time of year that you should be out working among your trees. Things to look for include new growth shoots, insects and insect damage, disease and related damage, rodent damage and weed competition. Snow and ice injury may also be present. If you discover an insect or disease problem and you are not sure of what it is or how to control it, call your local Ministry of Natural Resources office. We have trained professionals on staff who will help you to identify your problem. They will also offer appropriate and effective control measures.These may include treatment with an appropriate insecticide, or total removal of diseased stems. Often the evidence of an insect or disease infestation will be Visible after the damage has been done. In some cases this damage may result in a slight disfiguring of the affected trees. These damaged areas can easily be removed by using a pair of small, sharp pruning shears. Ministry of Natural Resources staff can advise you on how to conduct this selective pruning. Care must be taken not to damage the remaining healthy branches of the tree. Since this equipment is dangerous, you should take appropriate measures to avoid injuring yourself. Your equipment should be well maintainedâ€" sharpened and oiled regularly. It must also be disinfected after cutting diseased material, in order to prevent the spread of disease to other trees. Spring is a great time to be outdoors. A great way to spend a nice, sunny day is to get out in the fresh air and enjoy your trees. So, get out and enjoy the outdoors, and remember - your plantation needs you!
