Set in "wrnwall and London it produces v1v1d glimpses of thP emotions and the st r iqunt shortages Of the war in England. Ambrose, her husband is a total loss and Richard her lover prOVides romance, of course, but the intimate details are left to the reader's imagination, for which one may give thanks. To this reviewer, a Londoner who lived through the blitz and has enjoyed many blissful times in Cornwall the vivid descriptions are accurate and bring about an acute attack of homeSickness. Worth reading. Letters fromâ€"EM selected by Anthony Sattin Florence Nightingale was no stranger to the Eastern Mediterranean when she went there to organize a hospital unit during the Crimean War. She spent five months travelling on the Nile during the winter of 1849-50 and this book is made up of the long letters she wrote her family whilst there. She was one of the earliest women to record such a journey. This is her only publication not concerned with nursing and is valuable for her impressions of Egypt at t} at time and its glimpses into her own illustrious future. JR Sflgking not Allowed by Gilda Berger As the title suggests this American book is not primarily about the harmful effects of tobacco smoking, That is assumed. What it rather does is to debate the social and legal implications of the banning of smoking. Smoking has already beccme ar- embarrassment and illegal under cetain circumstances, but some difficult choices lie ahead for those who like the U.S. surgeon general would like to see a smoke free society by the year 2000. JR as Upper and Slaughter, Stanway and the Swells remain timeless and unchanged. JR The Cotswolds by R. Whiteman and R. Talbot A beautiful book about England's Cotswolds, which extend through the county of Gloucester from Bath to Broadway. Pictures show the gently rolling hills, high wind-swept welds and wooded coombs, but it is the warm, golden limestone seen in every field, farm and parish and in every cottage, manor and church that gives the area its beauty and its harmony. Donations have been coming in in healthy numbers but we're still willing to accept more. And don't forget us on July 9 - that's when you can get a great deal on a whole new box of books. $AVE 5.5 Cents per litre on delivery of Farm Gasoline and Coloured Diesel, with your sales tax bqu permit number. Also on Elgin Day the library will be sponsoring a Children's Show at 1:30 p.m. in the United Church basement. Though final details were not available at "press time", we plan to sponsor a show that will be principally musical in nature and definitely geared to the tastes of a young audience. The Children's Show is an important part of Elgin Day for many families and this year we will again provide that entertainment opportunity. The librarians are busily planning our Summer Reading Program for children. The theme this year is "Dig In!" Any dig leads first to dinosaurs â€" always popular with children; but digging can also lead to new books, new authors and new experiences. So we hope that this summer's dig will unearth something appealing to all children. Further details are available from your librarian and will also be provided in the next issue of the lantern. Finally, I have decided to relinquish my responsibilities at the library in order to better deal with the demands of a new home and a growing family. I have sincerely enjoyed my association with the Rideau Lakes Union Library system and would like to thank the Library Board members and the staff of all the branches for the support they have given me ' constantly. The members of our communities are very fortunate to have such dedicated and caring people working to bring them such excellent library service. I would especially like to thank Marjorie Keates for seeing me through just about everything! I wish my successor, Kathy Kompass of Portland, good luck in this new job, and as much pleasure in the tasks as I have experienced. Lorraine Porter ' (flou- TUE. ‘Wed. o‘7u'.
