' ‘ Judges by Jack Batten Jack Batten's' book of judge stories is now at the library and makes for some timely reading. It is a fascinating study of some of the personalities who steer the course of Canadian law, from Provincial Court judges to the justices of the Supreme Court whose decisions make history. Chattily written, but informed by Batten's knowledge of the law. JR Stories from the Arabian Nights by Naomi Lewis For one thousand nights and one, the lovely damsel Shahrazad told stories to the King and saved her life thereby. She told of sultans and sorcerers, of magic carpets and flying horses and of Aladdin, Alibaba and Sindbad the Sailor. Naomi Lewis's sensitive retelling of these timeless tales could appeal to readers of all ages. B-JRw . Behind the Wall ‘-Thubron This is one of several books that have been written about China since the chaotic last years of the Cultural Revolution. It would be hard to think of more perceptive travel writing. Mr. Thubron travelled the length and breadth of the country and met and mingled with all manner of people from Buddhist monks to the inmates of factories, fun palaces and jails. It is a brilliant mosaic of sights, sounds and encounters written in beautiful, almost poetic prose. JR by Colin Who, Saw Him Die? by Sylvia Radley When the local drunk Clanger Bell was run down and killed by Jack Goodwin, a new resident in the area, the verdict was accidental death. Clanger had a nasty habit of walking in front of oncoming vehicles, but the newcomer could not be expected to know that. Jack and his new wife had just moved to Breckham Market having left behind them a bitter first wife and two daughters who had been driven to help him build up a sizeable fortune. Thereafter everything goes awry. Clanger's sister Eunice believes he was deliberately killed and the ensuing police investigation leads Detective Chief Inspector Quantrill and his sergeant Hilary Lloyd on a complicated course. A good mystery. BS ' Association Rideau Lakes Union Library News At the February 25 meeting of the RLUL Board, Board members voted unanimously to send the following letter to the Honourable Ray Hnatyshyn, Minister of Justice, protesting Bill C-54, the Government's proposed antiâ€"pornography legislation. Dear Sir: I am writing to you on behalf of the Rideau Lakes Union Library Board regarding Bill C-54 introduced in parliament on May 4, 1987. While recognizing the need to control and curtail materials that portray or promote excessive violence and the exploitation of children, the Board believes that the legislation, as written, will have negative and wide-ranging ramifications for public libraries. The Rideau Lakes Union Library in its Selection Policy endorses the Canadian Library Statement on Intellectual Freedom. The Board is concerned that the right of the individual to have access to materials not be limited by legislation or by the personal views of any interest group.
