NOTICE OF INTENTION T0 DESIGNATE TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Bastard and South Burgess intends to designate the property, including lands and buildings at the following Municipal addresses as properties of architectural and historical value or interest under Part IV of The Ontario Heritage Act, 1980 R.S.O. Chapter 337. 1) JAMES HANNA HOUSE: Part lot 16, Concession 4, Bastard Township â€" Thousand Acres Road. The residence was originally built by and for James Hanna subsequent to 1851 and is presently owned by Mr. 8 Mrs. Wentworth and Marie Sharp. REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: STRUCHHE: Oneâ€"andâ€"oneâ€"half storey, rectangular in shape with a long facade with naturally finished sandstone cut and set in even courses. To the rear, an extension has been added. ROOF: Gabled with medium pitch, covered with heritage metal roofing and containing a gable in the facade. The trim consists of projecting eaves and verges, a moulded cornice and moulded frieze. The main house contains a semi-circular head surrounded by stone voussoirs. DOOR: Centrally located, set in a panel recess with a seniâ€"eliptical shaped transom with stone voussoirs. The -transom (with some interior modification) still exists fanâ€"lights, sideâ€"lights, and moulded trim, surround the six-panel door. 2) g HENRY FERRIS BOLHON HOUSE: Part lots 21-22, Concession 2, Bastard Township â€" Highway 15. The residence was originally built by 'and for Henry Ferris Bolton prior to 1861 and is presently owned by Mr.'Campbe11 Bogue. REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: STRUCTURE: Oneâ€"andâ€"one half storey, "T"-shaped, with a full basement having an external covered entrance of stonework. The naturally finished sandstones are set in even course in the walls. ROOF: Mediumâ€"gable with cedar shingles recently installed as on original roof and with trinmed eaves and verges. There are three single stack chimneys presently of brick and to be restored in stone. WINDOWS: Flat and rectangular with stone voussoirs, the multiâ€"paned casement windows having large central panes and small lateral panes or lights are a rarity in this locality. Secondâ€"floor windows have a sixâ€"overâ€"six pane arrangement. A window with a semi-circular head is located under the front gable. A semiâ€"circular head is located under the front gable. A semiâ€"circular vent in each end wall contains wood moulded in the shape of a fan. This would include shutters. DOOR: The main entrance is set in a recess with panelled sides. An important element in its design is the semiâ€"elliptical fanlight transom. This Adameque style, popular in Canada in the early 1800's became known as the "Loyalist Door", as it was apparently imported by Loyalist settlers. 3) ROBERT POLK HOLSE: Part lot 12, Concession 2, Bastard Township â€" Highway 15. The residence was originally built by Robert Polk and is presently owned by Duncan Ferguson. REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: STRUCTURE: One-andâ€"oneâ€"half storey brick with long facade and a brick wing extending to the rear. The brick was plastered on first floor front and side walls and has brick quoining. There is also a clapboard woodshed and summer kitchen attached to the rear and side of the rear extension. ROOF: Covered with patterned metal, the low gable roof also contains a gable in the facade. The eaves and verges project: a plain fascia and soffit constitute the remaining trim along with returned eaves. There are two dormer windbws, gabled with projecting eaves in the rear wing roof. A brick chimneins located at each end of the roof line. There is a third concrete block chimney. WINDOWS: Rectangular, with moulded wooden trim stone sills and brick voussoirs. Each doubleâ€"hung sash has a twoâ€"overâ€"two pane arrangement. In the centre gable there is a rectangular casement window with a semi-elliptical head. DOOR : Centrally located along the facade, the main entrance is set .in a recess with moulded frame, rectangular transom with multiple lights and sidelights. The solid five-panneled door retains its original-interior bolt. VERANDAH: Originally, a verandah with decorative trellis work covered the first floor front and sides of the house. ANY PERSON MAY, within thirty days of the first publication of this notice, send by registered mail or deliver to the Clerk of the Township of Bastard and South Burgess notice of his or her objection to the propOSed designations together with a statement of the reason for the objection, and all relevant facts. If such a Notice of Objection is received, the Counc1l of The Corporation of the Township of Bastard and South Burgess shall refer the matter to the Conservation ReView Board for a hearing. In the absence of the president, vice president Jean Peters presided. Jean presented a reading on "Fellowship". Minutes of the February meeting were read and approved. A brief report was given of Presbyterial, held at Lyn, where Reverend Gale Glover spoke on "Creation in the midst of crisis". Members were asked to save Campbell Soup labels. A letter of thanks for the dinner served on February let was read.An invitaation was received from Delta UCW to attend their Easter Thank Offering Service, on April 13th at 8p.m. (side door). World Day of Prayer service was held at Emmanuel Church where all received a warm welcome at the reception in the new hall.Next year World Day of Prayer will be held in Portland United. Donations to the Food Bank will continue on the 3rd Sunday of each month. It is felt that a box to receive donations should be made visible at each entrance to the church to remind people of the need. Following a vote it was decided to hold meetings ar 7.30 p.m. beginning with the April 19th meeting. Group 4 will have the worship and devotional service, group 1 will provide lunch. Jean closed this portion of the meeting with "A Faith that Smiles". Verna Sled began the worship service with a reading entitled "Storms". One verse of 'Master the Tempest is Raging" was sung and Verna read from Matthew. Sylvia French and Claire Mills presented a skit entitled "From my house to yours" the theme, "Life has many storms but we must learn to withstand the storms and see the good that often comes from them”The offering was received with a prayer dedicated by Verna. Claire closed with a prayer for guidance through the storms of life. Sylvia introduced the first of a four part film on Present Central Africa entitled" storms of life. LAWSON BUILDING SERVICES NORTH LEEDS LANTERN PORTLAND AND COMMUNITY HALL BOARD THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE Board was held on February 10, 1988, with eight members present. Minutes of the prev1ous meeting were aceepted. Business arising from the minutes and correspondence were dealt with. Various committee reports were discussed. The Treasurer's report was not available. A. Graham Will discuss with T.M.C. the problem of snow on the sidewalks on Hwy. 15. John Bastedo Will erect a Sign at the skating rink bearing the warning ” UnsuperVisedâ€" use at own risk” A. Graham was authourized to write to the Minister of Tourism and Recreation to support a grant application by Township Council for funds to improve the Hall. Meeting adjourned. Next meeting March 9,1988. The regular meeting of the Board was held on March 9, 1988, with nine members present. Minutes of the prevrous meeting were accepted as circulated. Constable Paul Arnold O.P.P. will attend the April meeting to liscuss the Neighbourhood Watch Program. Pat McManus will report at a later meeting re the discussions with Cowan Insurance Co.No Treasurer's report was available. The books are at the Township office for auditing. The rink at the dock has been satisfactory and well used. Approximately $100. of the grant from the Township Recreation Committee is unspent and will be used to purchase a pump and/or hose for use at the rink. A.Graham was authorized to write to Township Council pointing out that additional docking space is needed at the Public Dock. Alex McWhirter will negotiate with Ellard Barnes for the 1988 waste removal from the streets and Public Dock. Board is willing to assist as required With the Chamber of Commerce Summerfest.
