6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN SOUTH CROSBY ARCHIVES COLLECTION The South Crosby Archives Collection has been created to establish a collection of public and private documents representing the history of the township of South Crosby and its people. Part of this collection involves the early township records. For example, some of our papers date back to 1814. Proper care of these fragile records in the present is required to preserve them for the future. Assessment records from 1851 on also need correct storage. The collection at the same time also hopes to provide a home for personal or public papers belonging to interested local families. Over the years, many important documents have been destroyed. Paper records are often the only way to find local history. For example, an old wedding invitation can tell one a great deal about the people of that time. We are interested in deeds, letters, photographs, diaries, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, store accounts, minute books, maps, drawings, invitations, family histories, school and church documents as long as it involves this township. We are also interested in copying this material if the owner wishes to keep the original record. We will provide advice on the best way to store it at home as well. Please if you have any old documents, give us a phone call this summer. The project is sponsored through the Chaffey's Lock and Area Heritage Society with the support of the Township of South Crosby. Have you ever heard the story of the great Jones Falls barge disaster of July 1869? Elgin's first name was Nauvoo. Do you know why? This summer we have the answer to these questions and many more at the Chaffey's Lockmaster’s House. Thanks to the generosity of the Township of South Crosby, we are featuring an exhibit of township history in the upstairs of the museum. Colourful personalities and events of the area will be highlighted. Visitors will be able to see copies of old maps, early municipal records, school registers and store ledgers. As well, a local historian will be available several days a week to answer inquiries about family history, what to do with old family papers, where to go for information if you are interested in local heritage. Don't miss this opportunity. South Crosby covers three lockstations as well as the villages of Elgin, Morton and Crosby. Rideau Canal_ buffs should also be interested to see what we have. The exhibit will be open July until September from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily. ELGIN U.C.W. For the last meeting before the Summer Break, members were joined by the ladies from the Fellowship Group. In all 41 ladies enjoyed the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Willows at their summer cottage. A delightful supper was prepared and served by ladies from Philipsville Women's Institute, and with perfect weather conditions and be au‘tiful surroundings, a very happy evening was enjoyed by all. Offerings were taken and dedicated, and Eleanor Taylor gave information concerning "Elgin Day" which is to be held on July 9th. Life Membership pins were presented to four very worthy members, namely - Ev Campbell, Eleanor Taylor, Loree Smith and Anna Smith, and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Veita for her generous hospitality. The next meeting will be on the 13th September, when we shall have, as usual for the first meeting after the summer break, a Pot Luck Supper, and for this meeting, Mrs. Evelyn Campbell has offered the use of her summer cottage. A special thank you was extended to Marian Waenick, Anne Hoogendyk, Rose Kenney and Father Shea for the lovely and spiritual First Communion for our seven children last month. The members agreed to participate in a bake sale again this year in conjunction with Elgin Day. It was also voted that a committee be formed to organize welcoming into individual homes, anybody in need of shelter, especially any girl or woman who feels a choice is to be made concerning her unborn child. With the conclusion of her term Gen welcomed Katherine Dumas as our new President to begin her term this September. The meeting closed with a Plant Auction.
