PORTLAND AND COMMUNITY BOARD The regular meeting of the Board was held at the Hall on May 5/88 at 9:30 H. Twelve members attended. Minutes were read and accepted. A. Graham to advise Paul Arnold, O.P.P. that Neighbourhood Watch meeting on June 1/88 should last lhour only. Treasurer's report - Balance on hand May 11/88 - $3,547.75 (includes 1987 Dock Profit). Read and accepted. Correspondence was read and dealt with. Report of Committees- Maintenance - Alex McWhirter (a) grass cutting â€"Barry Baker @ $12/Hr - Approved (b) portable toilets: Campbell, Lyn - $70/unit/month + $35 each pump out. Armstrong, Smiths Falls - $110/unit/month, pumped out once each week included. Chicken Barbeque - Betty James The menu will be 1/2 chicken, baked potato, Cole slaw, buttered roll, hcmemade pie, coffee or soft drink. Public Relations - Brys Scovil Will publicize Chicken Barbeque details in July. Government Dock - A. Graham Discussed the 1988 notes now posted at dock. The seasonal docking will be considered at the end of this season; seasonal docking fees same as for 1987. > New Business - General (a) the erection of a éiéqmporary sign at the Dock, Thy ~â€" the Medical Centre is acceptable. Brys Scovil to ascertain from J. Horsfall, Chamber of Commerce, what plans and maps may ' be available to post at Dock. (b) Ron Welch to keep the fire extinguishers inspected and charges up. (c) Speed of traffic on Colborne Street - Pat McManus will raise with Council the matter of enforcement. (d) ’ Junior Softball league â€" John Jenkins advised that players for 3 teams are now registered at Portland; he will approach .the Municipal Recreation Committee for financial assistance. Motions (a) Moved that A. McWhirter obtain portable toilets from . 1 LN“ to the Municipal Council requesting that the Portland dump site be opened daily between 1600 H and 2000 H this summer (f) Moved that Vanluven be employed to test the fire alarm system and the emergency lighting at the Hall once in 1988 at the quoted price of $50 and that the Hall Custodian, Don Burchill, be instructed to make monthly tests as required to meet fire code requirements. (g) Moved that the initiative to have Portland teams in a Junior’s Softball League is an excellent move and this Board will support the teams to get started in the league. Meeting adjourned. Next regular meeting June 8/88 at 1930 H. ALZHEIMER SOCIETY Leeds & Grenville has formed a new Chapter of The Alzheimer Society. Members of the chapter open up an excellent opportunity for information sharing and gathering. Basic coping strategiesare discussed as well through the family support group.
