This time as Reeve. After six years on council - three as Deputy Reeve, three years on County Council and two years as the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville representative on the Rideau Valley District Health Council, I believe that I know what has to be done and I’m confident that I can do the job. Anyone aspiring to higher public office should have a vision. I do have a vision: I would want our decision making process to be based on planning, communication and consultation. Proper planning prevents painful problems. We must be willing to listen and seek solutions to problems by sitting down and talking. I would want to recognize all organized groups as an essential part of our community. Governments can't do everything, as much as they would like to make believe° It is the volunteer groups that makes every community tick. We all have the same objective, a better community, So let's do it together. Waste management is the biggest problem facing every municipality toâ€"day. I believe that recycling is the way to go. There are many things we can do ourselves to help reduce volume and costs. 1 would hope to hold public meetings to seek ideas, support and involvement. Our roads are generally in good shape. Our road department is doing a good job. The road to success is always under construction. It is important to keep up because once you get behind its hard to catch up. I would encourage the "keep-up" process and try to take advantage of any grants and supplements available. I am concerned about the preservation of our environment and natural resources. We have an Environmental Conservation Committee in place. They have done a good deal of research and made many contacts. I would encourage projects to protect and improve the environment and habitat. Our Recreation, Parks and Community Centres Committee have been very active in assisting many groups. I would encourage their continuation in . promoting, supporting and assisting recreational activities in the community.' There is a shortage of affordable housing in our township. The response to the recent questionaire has been good. The responses are now being analysed and if there is sufficeint demand we could apply to the Ministry of Housing for a project. I would pursue this possibility. Our Fire Department needs some new equipment. They can't provide protection without proper equipment. We must find ways and means to provide that equipment. According to the 1986 census there were L30 senior citizens in our township and the numbers are growing. These people brought us through two world wars and a depression. They are our heritage and are entitled to enjoy their retirement in comfort and to maintain their independence with dignity. I would want to encourage more respect, caring, support and assistance to these valued citizens. It would be a pleasure to again serve you on the Municipal Council. And, if elected, I will continue to D0 MY VERY BEST, in pursuit of a better community. And, I hope, that I may be worthy of your confidence. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
