6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN ELGIN U.C.W. President Shirley Bryden welcomed the ladies on November 8, 1988 and with Remembrance Day in mind, read a very meaningful message, "Hope for Peace." Marjorie Earl introduced the Worship, the first thought being - "Wars Fought and Won, but at What Cost." "The Nature of Faith" was the theme, with readings by Marjorie, Jean McIntyre and Shirley Bryden which included extracts frcm Hebrews 11. The book of Habakkuk gave the answers â€" "God, The Lord, is My Strength". The Hymn "0 Jesus I have Promised" was sung, offerings were taken, and dedicated by Shirley. 22 members attended the meeting, and Loree Smith introduced 2 guests, Peter and Becky Dennison. Peter is the son of Allyn and Betty Dennison, and grandson of May Dennison, all of this area. Peter gave a very interesting talk concerning their work as Missionaries in Nigeria, and as teachers in Bible School. He told of the tensions which he feels exists in the Missions, and the questions asked were: What does a Missionary do and What should a Missionary do? He made reference to the Bible passage taken from Matthew 28 "Go then, to all the peoples everywhere, and make them Disciples." He feels the main priority should be the making of Disciples and ministering to the social needs of the people including Education, Health and Agricultural improvements. In all it was a very interesting topic with much food for thought. Minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Lydia Tackaberry, and the financial report by Enid Soper who gave details of the Christmas Bazaar which raised a total, after expenses of $2,128.42. A very worthwhile figure, taking into consideration the unpleasant weather conditions of the day. Letters Eleanor catering were Taylor report. read, and gave the A happy social hour concluded the evening. with refreshments Provided by Loree Smith's group. The next meeting will be on December 13th, when the ladies of the Fellowship Grc up will also be invited. (_ Commissioner and SCOUTSCANADA _ On NovemberZ, 1988 Stan Lasenba, District Joan Smith, Training joined parents and families as lst Elgin Boy Scouts held their investiture at South Crosby Public School. Stan Lasenba reflected on the Scouting movement and on lst Elgin's rejuvenation after a period of 8 years. The District Commissioner invested 3 new leaders, Bill McGill, Larry Revelle and Herb Simpson. Herb and Larry invested their colony of 11 Beavers, Tom Hayes invested 5 Wolf Cubs (invested 1 absent the following week) and Frank Hayes and Bill MCGill invested 5 Scouts. Stan Lasenba lead the boys and their families in the popular "Going on a tiger hunt" song to close the evening. CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE Following the mass for deceased C.W.L. members, Vice President Samantha Moylan opened the November 22 meeting with a prayer. with twenty five members present roll call was answered by "where were you when J.F.K.was shot?" Nearly all members were able to say where. Minutes of the last meeting and treasurer ' 5 report were read and approved. Several thank you notes were read. Everyone was reminded of the upcoming Parish Pot Luck dinner to be held December 11. We are happy to announce that our Parish Dance was a success and enjoyed by everyone who attended. The proceeds from the dance are being given to Sister Julia for her' work in Guatamala. The Euchre parties are still going well with an open invitation to our next party to interested players. We will be sponsoring an afghan ticket raffle, donated by Mildred Burtch, to be drawn at the Christmas Pot Luck. Everyone was reminded of the ongoing Food Bank for donations in helping the needy of our community. Social time was enjoyed by all with a news trivia. The meeting was adjourned and followed by a delicious meal.
