Monday, October 24, the Leeds Grenville math club held their first meeting of the year. Rideau District High School hosted approximately one hundred and fifteen top math students from eight high schools across the counties. The guest lecturer was Mr. Jack Harvey, a member of Rideau District High School teaching staff, speaking on the topic of "Fractals". Mr,. Harvey explained that the study of Fractals is a unifying way of looking at different subjects as it crosses most boundaries of traditional knowledge. Examples of fractals can be found in many fields such as art, music, medicine, biology, geography and geology. The students learned some mathematical properties of fractals and how computers can be used to produce very interesting and colourful fractal designs. Some slides depicting these designs were then shown followed by WISHING YOU ALL THE MANY JOVS OF THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON and A BRIGHT and HAPPY NEW-YEAR the students breaking up into groups of six to work on a sheet of fractal problems. Some students were overheard discussing the feasibility of using their newly acquired knowledge of fractals for a school project. The students and teachers who attended this meeting would like to thank Mr. Harvey very much for his very informative and enjoyable presentation. Rideau’s annual Halloween dance took place during the weekend of October 22. It was a scary night for all and that wasn’t just because of the weather. Eventually we found Natalie Michaud and Lynn Young under the stripes and wings. There was a large turnout and everyone had a good time. Thanks to Valley Video for putting on such an entertaining evening and thanks to the student council for doing a fantastic job of organizing the dance.
