The regular date of the 17th had to be cancelled due to inclement weather. Also the hydro power was interrupted at Chaffey's Lock about 9:30 and was not restored until midâ€" night. The group was pleased 7 to welcome five guests from the Philipsville \WI branch. President Kathy Eberhard relayed the regrets from Shane's branch and the 4H Club that they could not attend. For many years, the 4H Club under the direction of Nancy Hayes and Jansje Keates have provided the refreshments for the March meeting. This year, howâ€" ever, they had other comâ€" mitments. Lola Timpany read an artiâ€" cle pertaining to the roll call which was "Yes", I'm growing older, but the important word in that sentence is not "older" it is “growing" Public Relations officer, Anne Willoughby, read a communication from the FWIC as to the procedure for tree planting, signs to indicate a WI presence in the community and the raising of the fees to $9.00 per year. The latter is not a popular move, especially in this time of recession. The present fee is $4.00. Guest speaker Marian Stone read an amusing article on volunteers and President Kathy read a letter from Family Focus in Elgin which will be given to the Program Director, Sharon Fleming, for conâ€" sideration. President Kathy then introâ€" duced Mary Warren, a lifeâ€" time member of the Chaffey's Lock Women's Institute, and Mary told us of their trip to Malta taken this winter. she brought photos, brochures, and souveniers and told us- a great deal about the history and geography of Malta. . It sounded like a most interesting trip and the weather was warm and comfortable. She told of how strategic the island was, especially in wartime and how the people rallied to defend a decrease of all the all-the APRfl.1992 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN 9 it and were granted the St. George Cross by England at the end of the war. Malta gained its indepen- dence in 1964 and the official language is English, although Arabic is spoken along with a popular dialect. Tourism is an important factor in its economy and visitors are made to feel welcome. It was a most enjoyable talk and made all the ladies forget for awhile the cold winter weather outside. President Kathy thanked Mary for her talk, the Philipsville ladies for their attendance, and those who had provided the refreshments and the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting be April let at Kathy Eberhard's home at 7:30 and the speaker will be Josie Mann who will talk about running a book store. Everyone is welcome. Jessica Alguire read the minutes from the last meeting. The were collected from the girls. Margaret Godkin put the girls in groups and showed us how to square our potâ€" holders. After we finished squaring the pot holders we had to iron our binding dues that we were going to sew on our squared potâ€" holder. We then pinned the binding onto the potâ€" holder and had to sew it on my machine. Boy, was that a job! Some of us had to rip it out two or three times, but once they were done they sure looked good. It showed us just who was born to quilt! A snack and hot chocolate was then enjoyed by all.
