LEGION SPONSORS PUBLIC SPEAKING Portland: Rideau Lakes Branch 231 held the Annual Public Speaking Contest on March 21, 1992. There were 27 contestants from South Crosby Public School (SC), Rideau Centennial Public School (RC), and Rideau District High School (RDHS). ' The quality and presentaâ€" tions were execellent, a credit to the schools and students. The judges were: Betty James, Dianne Haskins and Clifford Smith. The first place winners received a trophy. First, second, third and fourth received a cash award and all contestants reâ€" ceived a certificate. The first place winners 'advance to the Zone Gâ€"2 Contest at Mallorytown on March 29th, and the winners there . advance to the District G Contest at Smiths Falls on April 5th. Raison Secretary-Treasurer it?†at 'Reveille. 60TH ANNIVERSARY: RIDEAU LAKES BRANCH 231 ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION The Rideau Lakes Branch (Ontario 231) celebrated their 60th anniversary on the 28th and 29th of February, 1992. The gala began on Friday evening with a dance and singâ€" along. Comrade Doug Baker supplied the music and Rita McGratton led the sing-along. Even though there was a very small crowd, it was really enâ€" joyed by all present. Saturday's events started at 2:30 p.m., with the dedication of the new cenotaph at the Legion Hall on Harlem Road out of Portland. In spite of a fiercely cold day, about 25 people attended. The colour party was led by the Branch Sergeantâ€"atâ€" Arms, Comrade Alf Cassidy; with pastâ€"President Frank Dinner, Joe Dillon, Georgie Shanks, Jean Dwyre, Bonnie Sled and Cheryl Anne Bruyere making up the colour party. They were a very impressive group for the amount of practice they had. Reverend Paul Kompass led the group in anthems and hymns, with Reverend Harry Seeley presenting the scripture lesson along with the dedication of the cenotaph. President Doug MacKinnon unveiled the cenotaph and District Commander Jim Margerum gave a very dedicated address. Wendy Purdy supplied the bugle salute of the Last Post and Wreaths were laid by First Vice-Presiâ€" dent of Ontario Command Comrade Lloyd Hollingshead assisted by Branch 231 President Doug MacKinnon, District Commander Jim Margerum and Zone Commander Wilmer Tedford. The Legion Ladies' Auxiliary was represented in the wreath laying ceremony by their Second Vice-President Ontario Command Comrade Rose Green assisted by Branch 231 President Bertha Dillon. An anniversary dinner was held Saturday evening with Comrade Lloyd Hollingâ€" shead being the guest speaker.
