A Crushing Need Now that recycling is well-established in the Township of South Crosby and the recycling habit is growing, the focus of your local recycling committee is shifting to improving the efficiency of existing programs, while adding new dimensions to these programs. In terms of new dimensions, an application has been submitted to the Ministry of Environment to enable the purchase of home composter units for South Crosby residents. Watch for details of this initiative in the very near future. In reviewing the overall recycling program in South Crosby, one is struck by the ' impressive volumes of materials deposited for recycling. From April of 1991 through December of 1991, the blue bins accounted for a total of 77.5 tons of recycled materials: Newsprint - 45.9 tons; Steel Cans - 8.3 tons; Aluminium Cans - 1.2 tons; Glass - 18.4 tons; PET Bottles - 3.7 tons. This is an impressive listl Each ton of recycled material greatly reduces the volume of material deposited in the landfill and greatly extends the life of the landfill site. However, the actual costs of recycling are also impressive. Transportation costs alone amount to nearly $5,000,00 for the above materials. Directly (municipal taxes) or indirectly ( grants from M.O.E.), our taxes pay the lion's share of these costs. Therefore, it is in our best interest to make the recycling program as efficient as possible. One improvement we can make quite easily is to crush all cans placed in the blue bins. By crushing, the weight per volume of steel and aluminium cans can be increased by a factor of fivel Since trucking costs are the same for cans, whether crushed or uncrushed, it makes sense to crush cans so that we pay for hauling steel or aluminium rather than air surrounded by a bit of steel or aluminium. After all, a given volume of uncrushed cans is mostly airl Recycling guidelines ask that you flatten or crush all cans. It makes sound economic sense to do this. Removing tops and bottoms of cans where possible and flattening them is recommended as a spaceâ€"saving and cost-saving measure. 9 Do your part to help make our local recycling programs work - we all save in the long runl ’
