6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN JAN/FEB I992 CHAFFEY'S LOCK WOMEN'S INSTITUTE The January meeting of the Chaffey's Lock Women's Institute met at the home of Janice Cross and the evening began with a showâ€" ing of the video tape of the Christmas party held at the hall on Decemâ€" ber 7. The humerous skits were even funnier when watched on a large screen! President Kathy Eberhard opened the meeting by introducing Mr. Frank Phelan, Queens Biological Station. The station located here at Chaffey's, has been in operation since 1945 and gives stuâ€" dents and teachers alike a chance to work in the field. There are day programs designed for elementary school children and many subjects are tackled. One of the most interesting is the bluebird ‘ box program and Frank explained some of the experiments that are carâ€" ried out and what can be learned from them. People come from all over the world to the Biological Station and there are even winter programs conâ€" ducted on the weekends. Queens and Frank would like to eventually have some good winterized buildâ€" ings so that a wider pro- gram could be undertaken. There are so many onâ€"going studies of interest that have direct bearing on your environment, such as exessive weed growth in our waterways, fish habitat, bluebirds, zebra mussels, tree swallows, bats, snakes and the efâ€" fects of overpopulation, loss of habitat and adverse conditions. The question and answer period on the subjects was so interesting that time ran out far too quickly. President Kathy called the regular meeting to order with the ode, col- lect, minutes of the last meeting and treasurer's report. Letters of appre- ciation were read from Betty Franklin, thanking the ladies of the Insiti- tute for their work to put on the annual Christmas party. Also a letter from Heritage president and secretary David Brown thanking the WI for it's donation . The thanks were much appreciated. President Kathy spoke of the enjoyment that the WI ladies experienced at the Christmas dessert tea held by the Philipsâ€" ville branch at their hall.
