12 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN JAN/FEB 1992 LEGION LITERARY COMPETITION GREAT SUCCESS Portland: Rideau Lakes Branch No. 231 has comâ€" pleted the 1991 Annual Remembrance Literary Com- petition. There were 48 entries from South Crosby Public School (SC), Rideau Centennial Public School (RC) and Rideau District High School (RDHS). Students are entered into categories according to their School grades. Grades 1 â€" 3 do posters@ All others write either an essay or a poem on why we should remember the men and women who gave their lives during World Wars for our country and freedom. First to fourth place winners receive cash prizes. All participants receive certificates. First place winners are entered in the Zone Gâ€"2 competition. Congratulations are extendâ€" ed to all participants. A very special thanks to the school Principals, teachers and staff for their support and coopera- tion in making it all possible and successful. Raison, Secretaryâ€"Treasurer SENIORS PLANNING NEW YEAR Portland: Rideau Welcome Club 693 ended 1991 with the Annual Christmas Dinner on December 4. A super turkey dinner, with all the trimmings, was catered by Sharron Robson of Lom- bardy. Not only did they feed us, they entertained with Christmas carols. Entertainment was provided by Doug Dawe on piano and two young ladies on violin. It was a great evening and enjoyed by all. This year, instead of exchanging gifts, everyâ€" one brought items for the municipal food bank. 1992 commenced with a "Pot Luck" luncheon at noon on January 8, and the election and installa- tion of officers. Our special guest was Peter Breedyk, the Zone President, who assisted with the installation by administring the obligaâ€" tion to the officers and executive. The shopping bus to Kingâ€" ston on the second Tuesday of each month is again very popular. The Interlink Program, bringing seniors and grades 3 â€" 4 students from Rideau Centennial School together, with singing and friendâ€" ship, is going very well. All seniors are welcome. The Wednesday afternoon dropâ€"in is open at 1:30 p.m.. There is Carpet Bowling, floor shuffle board, darts, cards, etc.. Bring your friends and guests and enjoy an afterâ€" noon of liesure. All seniors are welcome. Membership is open to all seniors, 55 and over, in the area. New members are welcome.
