Special guest was Ms. Myoung Hwa Hwong who lives on the Jones Falls road and makes exquisite jewellery. The pieces are light and durable â€" ideal for travellers. She often uses fine leather, tooled and painted and trimmed with many diverse and attractive things found in nature such as mosses, silver dollars, and flowers. Working with a leather tool, scissors, and various paints, she showed how a piece is formed. A finished piece would take many hours and detailed work. President, Kathy Eberhard thanked Ms. Hwong and the regular meeting got under way with the ode and collect. Roll call was "describe a gift you have made yourself". Most of the members are proficient at some type of craft and described crocheted and knitted articles, ceramic pieces and flower arrangements. Secretary, Eleanor Pinsonnault read the minutes of the last meeting and extended an invitation she had received from the Philipsville Branch to a Christmas tea at the W.I. hall in Philipsville on December 13. About 12 ladies expressed . a deSire to go and Eleanor will contact the Philipsville group. Mary Warren, our district delegate, gave a report on the District Conference, October 23 at Spring Valley Hall. She reminded the ladies that the Women's Institute was not formed as merely a social club, but as a means of improving health conditions among rural families and within our communities. The Rural Organization Specialist, Cherie Vasey also stressed these issues and will speak to any group who needs ideas and direction. Thea Dodge, on behalf of the Heritage Society, reminded the Institute of their generous dOnation each year to help run the Museum and was given a cheque by the Treasurer, Linda Pyne. As representative for the W.I. on the hall board, Thea also announced an open meeting to be held December 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the hall and urged all interested nersons to attend with their ideas and/or criticisfi. The rest of the meeting was taken up with discussion of the Christmas party to be held December 7 at the hall at 6 p.m. Everyone in the community of Chaffeys is invited and each family will bring a casserole and dessert and a small gift for each family member. Santa has promised to make an appearance and there will be a program. Linda Pyne, after much coaxing, has agreed to be the M.C. again this year. The meeting was momentarily interrupted by June's big friendly black lab, Duke, who announced by his barking that he would like to come in. There was no doubt, however, that he had just visited a rather unfriendly skunk! June ushered him away very quickly and down to the basement. No doubt June and Peter spent the next few hours giving Duke a tomato juice bath. The December meeting is the Christmas party and W.I. hopes to see everyone out. The W.I. has again this year decided to hold a New Year's party at the hall. Final arrangements will be made by a committee of Marion Chester, June Alford, Janice Cross, Linda Pyne, and anyone who would like to help. The next regular meeting will be January 21, 1992 at 7:30 at Janice Cross'. Thea Dodge he U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare asked for $23,000 for a study of the various ways children fall off bicy- cles. The title of the proposed study was “Evaluation and Parameterization o5 Sta- bility and Safety Performance Characteristics of Two- and Three-Wheeled Vehicular Toys for Riding.” â€"Queens University Journal BREEIINGS TU THE TUwN DF ELGIN 1 have written these verses on with thoughts of my friends "Friendship” in Elgin who are always so friendly and helpful to me when I am up there in beautiful Chaffey's Lock on Indian Lake in the summer. Greetings to all of you and best wishes for a "Very Merry Christmas" and a "Happy New Year". A friend is someone who cares... r A friend is someone who shares... Your joys and your sorrow One who makes you feel "tomorrow" there's always A friend is someone who is always there... When sadness strikes and you re full of despair... One who can help you find... Confidence, comfort and peace of mind A friend is someone who you’re "down" "stays up" when Someone who helps keep your feet on the ground One with whom you can “enjoy together"___ Havxng"fun" and building memories which last forever A true friend is good to have around And harder to find than buried treasure in the ground. But always remember ~ to have a good friend You have to be a good friend. Friendship is a fragile thing It has to be nurtured to hold a true ring. Friendship is a treasure to behold And it can come back to you one hundred fold! Bettie Macdonald Montreal and Chaffey’s Lock, Ontario November, 1991.
