if. i? £9 REAL CHRISTMAS TREE 1Q, FOR A SAFE & HAPPY $3 HOLIDAY SEASON a l Buy fresh christmas Tree and keep it fresh. These are the two most important things to remember in selecting and caring for a real Christmas Tree according to Margot Hamblen, sales manager of Hamblen Christmas Tree Farms. There are a few tests the tree purchaser can make to check for the freshness of a tree. Gently stroke a branch with your fingers. The needles should not come off in your hand if the tree is fresh. Look on the ground around the standing tree. If there is an excessive number of green needles on the ground, it might be wise to reject the tree. One way of being sure of obtaining a fresh tree is to visit one of more than 25 growers that operate a "cut your own" operation. Not only does this ensure you of a fresh tree but it can provide for a family outing in the 'country. Many "cut your own" growers provide a bonfire, marshmallows and rides such as the Hamblen operation on Highway 42. Families are encouraged to bring skis, snowshoes and their own †saw. For families with samll cars, Hamblen has a modern baling machine that wraps the tree in plastic metting for your convenience. Christmas trees are grown as a field crop and harvested for your enjoyment. During their growing years, they have cleansed the air, provided you with oxygen, protected your water supply and make a home for wildlife as they beautified the land. To assure that your tree will stay flame resistant, mount it in a water~holding stand. Keep the stand filled with water by adding to it daily. A tree may absorb from a pint to a gallon of water daily. The water will prevent the needles from drying and the boughs of the tree from drooping. "And" Hamblen insists "it will not be a hazard in the home. A Christmas Tree with moisture in its branches and needles is no more flammable than a damp leaf." "Natural Christmas Trees offer so much pleasure to any Christmas celebration. That is why so many families select a real tree for a truly traditional Christmas," Hamblen states. Hamblen Farms can be reached by going to Athens and watch for signs. The operation is open ldaily, dress warmly and come and enjoy yourself @’ SELECTION a. CARE 01?
