6 non" lEEDS LANTERN NOVEMBER 1991 D.A.R.S. DELTA The monthly meeting of the D.A.R.S. Delta was held on October 1 at the Recreation Centre with only a few in attendance. The meeting got underway with the readings of the minutes and all were correct. It was decided that the hockey ticket pool would stay the same as other years. These tickets can be obtained at Stearry's Service Station, Food Town grocery store and Ron Morris' grocery in Delta. Plans were discussed to put a tender in the paper at a later date, as to the flooding of the rink this winter, as it is difficult to find volunteers to help with this. As to the Broomball Club which is to commence this winter, Brian Daye was voted in as Chairman. We do hope they have a good season. The landscaping and the seeding of the lawns are in progress when weather permits. Cork Phillips has volunteered to look after this, as well as Bud Pratt, Chris Hart, Brian Daye, Johnny Perrin and Doug Eyre. Any other volunteers are welcome. shrubs and trees are being planted by Ed Stoltz from Ed's Garden Centre in Athens. Memorial Donations are being taken for these. Let us now turn to the Horseshoe Tournaments which were held in September at the Recreation Centre and were enjoyed by the players and the spectators. CEAFFEY'S LOCK WOMEN'S INSTITUTE "It was a dark and stormy night" â€" Snoopy starts all his stories with this line - but it really was true for the October meeting of the Chaffey's Lock Women's Institute. About 15 ladies, including life member Kathryn Scott, who had to cummute from Kingston, attended the meeting at Lola Timpany‘s lovely home on Clear Lake. One of the Institute's hardest workers, Sharon Fleming, attended on crutches. Sharon is recovering from an ankle operation and although the cast is gone she still cannot put any weight on her foot. She was able, however, to introduce the guest speaker, Don Franklin, a well~known and active member of the Chaffey's community, who is running for Public School Representative for South Crosby, Leeds and Lansdowne. Don is the father of three children presently in the South Crosby school, and hopes to deal with problems such as getting fair value for every tax dollar collected. He believes that there should be two open meetings (at least) a year so that the public can question members directly. He questions some of the expensive programs and believes that board members should be accountable to the tax paying public. His ideas were sound and he got a great round of applause and encouragement for running for Public School trustee. President, Kathy Eberhard opened the regular session of the meeting with the Ode, Collect, minutes of the last meeting and treasurer's report. she announced the October 23rd Leeds District Convention at Spring valley Hall. Four members will attend. Mary warren brought to the ladies attention, the need to keep the Red Cross cupboard at Guthrie House in Elgin. The equipment has been purchased over the years by fund raising and donations from various local organizations, and letters will be written to the local papers stating that the members of the Community want this equipment to be kept here for the use of the locals rather than having to request crutches, wheelchairs, and sick room equipment from Smiths Falls and/or Brockville. Plans for the December 7th Christmas party at the hall were discussed and a meeting chaired by June Alford will be held at June's house October 28th at 7:30 p.m. Anyone who wishes to participate or has any ideas for a program would be welcome to submit them at this time. Kathryn Scott and Bea Hughson are both concerned with the sad state of the piano at the hall, and the hall board will be asked to contact someone to come and tune and fix it before the Christmas party. Mary Warren will donate a tree again this year from the Warren Tree farm. The roll call was "In what way did your education prepare you for the work place?“ Everyone agreed that education has certainly changed over the years - sometimes for the better and sometimes not: Most of the ladies recalled incidents that illustrate this point. President Kathy will call an executive meeting before the end of the month. she thanked all for coming out on such a dreadful night, Lola for the use of her home, and the ladies who provided the tasty refreshments. The next meeting will be November 19, 7:30 p.m. at June Alford's home. The theme will be local industry and there will be a speaker. (Everyone is welcome. Thea Dodge Discover _‘ Birkenstock?
