RIDEAU LAKES HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY At the September 3 meeting in Forfar Hall, Karen Garlick of White Rose Nurseries, Kingston, supplied good solid information on handling all kinds of bulbs, including forcing procedures for indoor wintertime blooms. Kay and Don Williams brought some of their beautiful African Violets which were auctioned off to benefit the Society. There were numerous lucky number draws. One of our members brought a plant for indentification. It was a very obnoxious weed called Velvet Leaf or Abutilon Theophrasti. This plant can be devastating to corn crops, and if found, should be pulled out and burned. It I reproduces only by seed and it may have come from packaged bird seed. It is worse than Purple Loosestrife. On September 11, fortyâ€" seven happy souls took advantage of the bus trip to the Montreal Botanical Gardens. It was a beautiful day. We left Portland and then Crosby around 7:30 a.m. and arrived at our destination about 10:30. Lois Mowat handled the entrance formalities smoothly and we were off exploring to our hearts' desire. At 2;30, Lois had arranged for guided tours of the Chinese and Japanese Gardens and although some of us had explored these areas on our own, our guide supplied fascinating information which enhanced our understanding of the landscaping designs. This is the largest Chinese Garden ever built out of Asia. The dream lake garden "of water and mountains" was prefabricated in Shanghai and shipped by sea and assembled in Montreal. It is a copy of a garden belonging to a wealthy family. The entrance is approached through a simple parklike setting with a winding path (the eVil spirits always travel in a straight line). To enter the garden, must step over the highlyâ€"polished metal threshold. There are seven pavilions of various sizes, all magnificent in their design, construction and decoration. one of the pavilions represents a boat. This stems from the time that an empress of long ago cheated the powers that be by receiving money to finance a ship she was having built and the authorities discovered it was to be a beautiful pavilion in her garden (sound familiar) so now all Chinese gardens sport a boatâ€"â€"not necessarily afloat. The Japanese a tranquil setting with pools and waterfalls. The pavilion is a cultural centre which houses an Art Gallery, a Library and a Tearoom where the centuryâ€"old tea ceremony is ritually performed. The Zen garden, the garden of silence, invites meditation. The Bonsai garden displays a rare collection of dwarf trees, some of them several centuries old. In addition to special attractions, are Rose gardens, and Perennial gardens, and Conservatories with Tropical Rain Forest Ferns and Orchids. one wide Garden is these there Annual We arrived home shortly after 8:00 full of enthusiasm for all we had seen and learned and with grateful thanks to Lois Mowat and to our intrepid bus driver, Russel Joint. How fortunate we are to be able to drive to Montreal and take advantage of this wonderful facility almost on our doorstep. The next meeting of the Horticultural Society will be on Tuesday, October 1 in Forfar Hall at 7:45 p.m. It will be the Fall Plant Swap. This is a great time’ to thin our big clumps of perennials and make room for new varieties. Come join in the fun. To cut down on the use of disposable paper cups, bring your own tea cup or coffee mug. Shirley Horsfall MUELLER MACHINERY LTD.
