10 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN JUL/AUG 1991 PORl LAND - SENIORS CELEBRATE SENIORS MONTH Portland: June is Senior Citizens month in Ontario. To mark the occasion Rideau Welcome Club No. 693 held an open house, tea, bake sale, crafts, antiques and raffle on June 15. An excellent turn out made it all worth while. The crafts and antiques were of great interest and the bake table was sold out. The raffle winners were: lst â€" a needle point framed picture, made and donated by Claire Mills, was won by Mary O'Meara; 2nd â€" a hand made rug by Allan Bond was won by Raymond Hull. The committee is to be congratulated for a job well done and a big thank you to all who attended and supported. Interlink, an intergenerational program of the Canadian Mental Health Association, the first in Eastern Ontario, has been a big success. It has been most rewarding working with the school children. A greater understanding, respect and long lasting friendship have been established. A hearty vote of thanks is extended to: The School Principal, Mrs. Moulton, who was responsible for getting the program authorized through the School Board; to William Morris, the Musicalâ€"Director, who had great patience keeping everyone in line; to Mrs. Powell, the organist and Annette Pinkney from the Leedsâ€"Grenville C.M.H.A. They made a good team and everything went smoothly. The final get together before the summer vacation, was held at Rideau Centennial School on June 17 and included a strawberry social. A video on the public appearances was shown. Everyone received a certificate of LeedsGrenvelle C.M.H.A. There is good reason to uelieve that the program will be continued. July is picnic this year we at Bill Narrow's Wednesday, time and will meet Barker's on Lock Road, on July 3 at 12 noon for a "POTLUCK" picnic. Everyone to bring a dishles) of food, dishes, cutlery, lawn chairs and swimming suits. Wishing everyone a happy, pleasant and safe holiday. Joe K. Raison The second meeting of the Leeds 4H Beef Calf Club was held at the home of Mr. Elmer Campbell on May 14, 1991. The club was invited to attend a 4B show and a workshop on care of cattle. Two new members were introduced â€"- they were Rodney Dowdall and Andrew Willows. The members watched videos cattle management and instructed in some of the basics of Showmanship and judging. on beef were The next meeting will be held June 4 at the home of Pamela French starting at 7:30 p.m. PORTLAND UCW The Portland and Harlem- Chantry UCW members met together for the June meeting. The meeting was in honour of Marion Seeley. Jean Peters opened business with a welcome to all and a reminder that June is Senior Citizens month. This topic was the theme of the evening. A short business meeting followed and it was noted that the next UCW meeting will be on September 17 at 7:30 p.m. Audrey Sheldon opened the devotional with a prayer. "Take Time to be Holy" was sung, accompanied by Syliva at the piano. 0 God Be Gracious was read in unison. Phyllis Fuller read and article “Getting Older Without Getting Old“. Audrey read "Older People Never Grow Old" and Pat Carr read "Secrets for a Long Healthy Life". We heard we should continue to acquire knowledge, be happy and laugh a lot, avoid being critical and nurture our spirit by living by the rule book - The Bible. The meeting closed with the singing of The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, is Ended. At this time Jean Peters presented Marion Seeley with a gift and a message of thanks for Marion's help and friendship to all, over the years. Clara Townsend conveyed a similar message and gave Marion a gift from the Harlemâ€"Chantry members. A social hour followed. Everyone enjoyed the lovely cake Beryl Blackman made for the occasion. ALL ROADS LEAD TO CROSBY FLEAMARKET EVERY SATURDAY JUNE 29 - AUGUST 31 LEGION HONORS LADIES Portland: Rideau Lakes Branch No. 231 held the Annual Ladies Appreciation Night on Saturday, June 15. A fine crowd enjoyed a super roast beef dinner provided by .the Philipsville Women's Institute. The guest of speaker was Seeley. His subject was O'Canada - past, present and future. He gave an interesting account of the development of the country and reasons for the many problems we face toâ€"day. Our problems are mostly man made. He challenged the Legion to take an active roll in trying to keep Canada united. A number of Awards were The 50â€"50 draw by Brent Hanna. knitted sweater by Trenna Raison. The branch is supporting minor sports. $300.00 was donated to the Portland and District Minor Ball and $200.00 to the Portland Soccer Assoc. The volunteers who organize and coach these children are to be commended for their good work in building better citizens. The net profit from the Fisherman's brunch being held on June 29 is earmarked for minor sports. A Fisherman's brunch will honour and Rev. Harry Honours and presented. was won The hand was won be held at the Legion Hall on Saturday, June 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Pancakes w/maple syrup and sausages, coffee, tea.
