RIDEAU LAKES HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Since Johnny Appleseed did his famous 'walkâ€"about', there are now more than 100 varieties of MacIntosh apples grown and enjoyed. On April 2, Larry Robinson of Roblyn Eyrie Farm gave a fascinating talk on the propagation and cultivation of fruit trees. He advised on the selection of fruit trees for our area, Zone 5; best locations for planting; the benefits of pruning and methods of protecting fruit trees from mice, rabbits and sun scald. He made available a comprehensive study and guide on planting and growing fruit trees. There are a lot of people in this' area interested in adding fruit trees to their gardens. This was evident by the many questions asked and which were competently answered by Mr. Robinson. Our next meeting, the Spring Plant Swap, will be held May 7, 7:45 p.m. at Forfar Community Hall. Master Gardenersâ€"inâ€"Training will be on hand to field your questions. i+++++++++++++++++i : LEEDS CHAPTER 255 4, + i EASTERN STAR 4; ¢ TEA i BAKE SALE 3: + CRAFTS E FORFAR MAY 25TH E + 13010 3:30 1 ¢ ¢ + + a + + + + + + + a + + + + + + + + : +++++++++++++¢++++ (3.1;. 6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN MAY 1991 :i EIGIN NURSERY SCHOOL a‘% The Elgin and District Co-op Nursery School has been a busy place during the past couple of months. The 4H group, under the direction of Nancy Hayes and Jansje Keates provided the delicious refreshments. These young people cooked squares, cakes and cookies and decorated the tables with a St. Patrick's day motif and displayed some of their needlecraft. Mr. Pep Burt, a local farmer and tourist camp operator, owns and works a profitable sugar bush and brought us a video tape to show _tapping and sugaring off. Prsident Kathy thanked Mr. Burt and presented him with a small gift. The Chaffey's branch were hosting the Lombardy and Philipsville branch ladies. Unfortunately, the Lombardy ladies could not attend but about six ladies from Philipsville were present and told us of some of the activities carried out at their meetings. They do many interesting projects and a lot of valuable community work. President Kathy thanked them for their contribution to our meeting. After the guests left, the business part of the meeting began with the Ode and Collect. The motto and roll call were read. The roll call was, "What' are your earliest memories of something sweet?" Fourteen ladies answered with recollections of penny candy, humbugs, homemade sweets and sugar making.
