' of the A SALUTE TO THE WINTER SWIM PROGRAM For the past seven years, children in the Township of Rear of Leeds & Lansdowne have had the opportunity to take swimming lessons during the winter months. For 10 weeks, beginning in midâ€"January, the children are bused on Friday evenings to the Artillery Park Pool in Kingston. They take Red Cross lessons from the beginner's level (orange) ' to the white level. The program owes its success to a small group of very dedicated women. It all started in 1984, when Joan Tye of Ellisville felt that there needed to be more winter activities in addition to hockey and figure skating. She spoke to ‘Kay Caron, a neighbour, and the program began to take shape. They formed a committee with the addition of Linda Stanford, Bonnie Mainse and Paula Hibbert. The women felt strongly that the children ‘in their area should be able to swim well. Mrs. Stanford, in my interview with her, commented that five committee members, only Bonnie Mainse was able to swim. During the first one bus took 50 to five lessons. the years the year, children Over program has expanded to 10 classes with 100 children on two buses. In the' beginning, in addition to a registration fee, donations were received from local businesses in the township. Beginning in the second year, the Township's Recreation Committee provided funding. To keep the registration fees at‘ an affordable level, the> Committee has worked hard to raise extra monies. During this summer, they will be selling “Pay As You Pull" tickets. The present committee consists of . Kay Caron, Linda Stanford, Bonnie Mainse, Ruby Sweet, Lynda Hamilton, Debbie Kruz, and Lyn Russell. The program has always had the support of the whole township. On behalf and children enjoyed and benefitted from the swim program, a very sincere THANK YOU!
