FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Smiths Fallsâ€"â€"Formation of the Advisory Council on Aging for Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Counties became a reality here on Monday (February 25). Sixteen representatives of seniors and professional caregivers from across the three counties assumed office, and began to lay the groundwork for what promises to be a busy first year. A meeting of seniors and caregivers held in Perth in November unanimously endorsed formation of the COuncil. Purpose of the Advisory Council is to create the opportunity for seniors, leaders, and to work community service providers together "to encourage innovative and voluntary efforts to fill gaps in existing supports and services." It was explained that the Council will not itself be a provider of services. It will work, in an advisory capacity, in cooperation with other countiesâ€"wide organizations "to enhance the quality of life of elderly people." The council will develop and support a network which emphasizes the participation and involvement of all sectors of the community. The lGâ€"member Council elected its first slate of officers who will serve until the first annual meeting of the general membership expected to be held in March, 1992. The next meeting of Council is scheduled for Smiths Falls on Thursday, March 28 when it will consider a variety of agenda items.
