12 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN W'lmffll _ . Se eley’s Bay/‘7 SEELEY'S BAY UCW Our meeting this was held in the because month Library renovations are proceeding in our church. Hilda Simpson, Acting President, took the chair and welcomed everyone. Secretary, Jean Colluison gave her report. Freda Davies acted as Treasurer and Hilda Simpson gave the card report. One thing to remember - our Reporter Magazine has increased in price and is now $8.50 â€" please let us have renewals promptly. An invitation was read from Olivet UCW to attend their lunch and meeting May 1. This is an annual affair and very much enjoyed. The important event held since our last meeting was the Presbyterial Rally, held at Portland. Myrtle Simpson gave a fine report, making many of us wish we had been there. Just 5 ladies from our own UCW attended â€" 120 in total. Margaret McHendry opened the meeting with music and all sang the theme hymn. Norma Guthrie is Presbyterial President â€" also next year. Mary Howse reported that $350,000 was recently sent to the needy (Ethiopia) for health care and teaching people efficient ways to grow their own food. Many suggestions were made for helping them. One write to Joe Clark, feel and way â€" tell him how we talk peace. One hundred trees have been planted in Africa in the name of Kingston Presbytery. Morning worship was presented by Brockville. We sang spirituals - the theme being Loving Partners. The guest speaker was a Korean Minister who is in Canada for 3 years on a special mission. He had to spend time in Prison for saying "no" to things he felt were not right. Our support to Korea is important - in 1995 they will celebrate 50 years since liberation from the Japanese. Korean women are working hard toward this jubilee and are making Peace Ribbons, asking women everywhere to print a Prayer for Peace on each one. After a delicious lunch we printed our prayers on the ribbons and had lifnn“ ”7DT‘F “ml ,..-~...v APRu.I991 together to church. enough tied encircle the Memorial services was taken by Kingston and Sydenham section. Reports read and business matters and plans discussed. . Meeting closed at 3:30, and everyone agreed it was a good Rally and LOVing Partnership was a good theme for our times. Now to get back to our UCW meeting â€" the report of the Rally, just given, was for the benefit of many who did not attend it, at Portland. Our UCW program was conducted by Freda Davies and she spoke on a subject very important to all of us "Caring for Creation". We all know how we waste our materials and neglect to use carefully the many things invented for our comfort â€" not recognizing danger signals. This subject was well taken, and the author of the book "Caring for Creation", explained the many ways we could help to clean up our environment and we could begin now, and also learn more about toxic wastes. We remain ignorant of the experiences of many countries. This subject is far too big and serious for this report â€" some of us are still contending with the garbage and recycling problem, but, this at least is a beginning. Freda told us how clearly the author pointed out that we are helping to destroy our Canadian way of living. Meeting closed with refreshments and a lively discussion of Freda's program subject.
