l 3 l Rideau Lakes Union LIBRARY BOOK REVIEWS RED SQUARE by author Martin Cruz Smith. This is the third novel by the author starring the investigator Arkady Renko, the first two being Gorky Park and Polar Star. Both of his previous detecâ€" tive novels were considerâ€" able successes not only because of excellent writâ€" ing and an intriguing hero, but because of the careful research that laid down interesting scenarios in Moscow and on a fish factory ship in the North Atlantic. Red Square portrays the current scene in Moscow with rubles having little value and the Communist Party dead. Crime is ram- pant and the Russian Mafia is almost unchecked and operating the black market. Renko, in attempting to solve the murder of a police informant and black marketeer, travels to Germany in pursuit of suspects and fends off attempts on his own life. Great Stuff! Another Page turner! If you haven't already done so you could also treat yourself to a look at Gorky Park and Polar Star. BONES AND SILENCE by Reginâ€" ald Hill. I had intended to write a review of this book- written in 1990â€" because Hill has a new book out this year entitled Recalled to Life, and more than 20 others to his credit over some twenty years of writing. However, I chanced upon a review in the Globe and Mail a few weeks ago by Margaret Cannon. Reginald Hill was in Toronto at an interâ€" national convention of mystery writers and she writes about the author and his story characters rather than any specific book. Lovely stuff by a most capable reviewer and I copy bits and pieces with great pleasure. I quote "Hill is a world apart from P.D. James and Ruth Rendell, his more famous, but no more talented contemporaries among the "new" British crime authors. Perhaps of his style, because elegant flawlessly peppered with subtle wit and feisty banter, he's often consi- gned to that literary limbo known as the 'author's author'. His unique plot twists and his unusual characters, along with his penchant for critizing Thatcherite Britain, have led reviewers to compare him to Dickens and Trollope." On some of Hill's literary characters Ms.Cannon writes"Readers accustomed to the dulcet charms of Ngaio Marsh's Inspector DECEMBER I 992 NORTHLEEDSLANTERN 17 Roderick Alleyn or the the surface, the epitome literate restraint of of the silent copper, P.D.James 'Adam Dalgleish wield is also a heavily were unprepared for fat, closetted homosexual, crotch scratChing, pint entertaining fantasies swilling Dalziel, with of elegant little dinners his rolling brogue, his With the attractive young vulgar racist references, men under his command." and his penchant for why don't you try some patting and pinching any 0f the books by this intri~ woman unlucky enough to guing author?
