It was evident to all that the evolution of the organization has left some of the members with an enormous workload which they cannot be asked to bear any longer. The remaining members are unable to commit the time and energy which would allow us to continue producing the paper in the way we have done for so many years. If we cannot find a way to rejuvenate and reorganize. it seems probable that The Lantern will cease to exist by the end of the year. The Directors would prefer to see The Lantern carry on if possible and we have decided to invite suggestions and proposals from individuals or groups who would be interested in taking over its operation. The Lantern was established as a non-profit corporation which would produce and distribute a community newsletter on a regular basis. It Operates much the same as any business but without a payroll. The circulation varies seasonally but generally ranges between 2800 and 3500 cooies per month for 10 months of each year. The cepy and advertisements must be solicited. typed and arranged as you see them when your paper is delivered. The original copy must then be delivered to the printer. printed and mailed. Advertisers must then be billed and our bills must be paid with the receipts. The whole process must be directed by an editor to ensure that the paper goes out on time and accurate financial accounts must be kept and audited to ensure that the organization remains solvent. Needless to say the paper must have some place to call "home" so that all this activity can take place on a regular basis in some kind of orderly fashion. Traditionally the cost of printing has been offset by advertising revenues and our mailing expenses have been subsidized by contributions from the various townships. Advertising rates have always been set to ensure that expenses are met and no more so in a sense we have been a "hand to mouth" operation by choice. In summary. we feel that there is still a role for The Lantern in the community and it remains a financially viable operation but we have given it all that we can give and we must now look to others to carry on. The current directors and volunteers can assure our prospective successors of our good will and assistance through a transition period. We urge you or your group to consider taking over the operation of The Lantern in its current format or perhaps as something quite different. We are anxious to receive proposals or suggestions from grouos or individuals and the directors have agreed to meet on November 19 to review any and all submissions. If we are unable to identify a workable plan at that time we will probably attempt to wind up the affairs of The Lantern by year end. Once again we ask you to give this your urgent consideration and ask yourselves whether you might play a part in the continued existence of The North Leeds Lantern. re systems We? 21f you wish to place a sChristmas card in the :% December issue please a» I X a? 71% ‘fll Weird W‘flé ° EDITORIAL PAGE- Thc North Leeds Lantern is a monthly community Newspaper, distributed free of charge to all households in the Township of Bastard E S. The Elgin Lioness Club volunteer their time to raise money for: fire victims, medical emergencies, schools (both elementary and secondary), and all health associat- ions etc.-Heart and Stroke Diabetes, Kidney, CNIB, Cancer and the list goes on.... Recently we held a dance at the Elgin Lions Hall and we were both disappointed and saddened by the lack of support from our community. It takes a lot of time and planning for any function, only to have our efforts put us in the "red". We as a "Club" greatly enjoy and want to continue to provide service for our Community and we would gladly welcome any advice or suggestions from you to aid us in our money raising endeavours. Together we can make it Work. We want to thank all those who do support us and we ask that you generously continue to do so.
