NOVEMBER 1992 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN I7 maffifE‘and establish a EuTT' range of genetic difference in our stock plants. In a few years, the seeds and seedlings from these plants will be distributed via our small nursery to thOSe individuals who want to establish native plantings in their backyards. We'll take any seed from any tree or shrub, no matter how common you think it is and we'll grow Some and distribute any excess to others doing the same thing. We'd appreciate your help in this prOject, small differences such as this can make a difference to the native bird or insect pepulation. This in turn but it is another small way that Andrea and I think we can begin to "make a difference" and help out our environment. If you would like to help us establish the base collection, we’d welcome the input. Gather some seeds from trees and shrubs, do this in your cottage lot, your woodlot or your next walk in the bush around Hudson Bay. As long as it is native to Ontario, 1 want to grow it here on the farm in the collection. Put them in a baggie, write the name of the plant either on the baggie with magic marker or put a plastic label inside the bag and drop them off at our farm. We'll germinate the seeds and plant them in a special area of the farm to let them to assemble native trees for our collection. Why? I can just hear all the questions now. In southern Ontario, a lot of native stands of shrubs and trees are disappearing under the pressure of urban deveIOpment. This is not a problem unless you happen to be a butterfly or insect that lives on some of these native shrubs. With declining populations of insects, comes the disappearance of some bird populations from these areas. Likewise, the disappearance of some shrubs and their berry production also causes a disruption in the food supply of native bird and other wildlife species. The nursery industry tends to grow plants that sell well ( seems obvious) and in the past, plants that have sold well have mostly makes a difference to us and our future on this planet. IV ,7- ._ ~__._._.___._ k ,_ .r_,___ _ erga. been those that have large flowers, or were exceptional in some way. The cloning procedure that produced these best selling plants resulted in large numbers of very uniform plants being sold to the gardening public. That is as it should be if foundation planting is your goal or if you want to deCOrate the immediate area around your house. These clones may not however be the plants most desired by native insects or birds. Remember the plant was selected by the nursery trade becaUSe it had great flowers, not necessarily great fruit or leaf taste for caterpillars or other larvae. Now we have been asked by some of our customers if we had plants that would attract butterflies or birds to the garden. Also those gardeners living in more urban areas of the province really seem to be missing seeing Some types of birds or butterflies and are asking for these plants. If the clones won't attract the birds and butterflies as well as the natives, then perhaps the nursery industry should be growing and propagating natives. These natives would have good disease resistance and genetic variability and would act to feed our birds and native butterflies etc. Those people living in urban areas could create sanctuaries in their backyards for wildlife (get a group of neighbours to plant the back of their yards to native shrubs and trees and a small ace-system could be established in the midst of any urban centre) Our objective is to establish a source of plants WESTPORT OFFICE (613) 273-2852 REALTOR NEAR PORTLAND â€" Large 1% storey with 5 or 6 bedrooms, 1% baths, totally renovated.
