6 MORTHliEDSLAITERM JULY/AUGUSTI992 PORTLAND UNITED CHURCH WOMEN The UCW met in the friendâ€" ship room on Tuesday May 20, 1992 at 7:30 p.m. Shirley Scott opened the worship with a poem about gardens. Their theme being “The importance of the growing of our children and gardens". Hymn 23 "In the garden" was sung. Psalm no. 148 was read responsively with Jean Polk. Vulnerability of birds was read by Pat Carr, followed by Prayer. Vivian Perrin read a poem "The Childs Appeal". Hymn 11 "Beautiful Garden of Prayer" was sung. "Daily Thoughts and Daily Needs" was read by Peggy Bond followed by prayer. Verna Sled gave her thoughts of life and how important it is for everyâ€" one to live a good Christ- ian life, putting our church and God in first place. Jennifer Bond who had visited Paris, France from April 25 to May 13 shared with us some of her experiences there with her pen pal. Jean Polk thanked Jennifer and presented her with a small gift. Peggy Bond welcomed everyâ€" one and opened the business with "Our Garden". The minutes were read and approved. Roma Derraugh gave the treasurer's reâ€" port. Myrtena McVean gave the community friend~ ship report in the absence of Ruby Simmons. Peggy closed the business with an appropriate poem. All enjoyed a social time. This year's fair will operate for 3 days commencing on Monday July 27th. with special preâ€"fair events on Sunday_the 26th. Sunday starts off with an antigue tractor pulling contest at 1:00p.m. ; a beef barbegue at 4:30p.m. ; and an old fashioned hymn sing and gospel concert at 7:00p.m. featuring In Harmony, Reynolds Rutledge Family and the Watkins Familyâ€"Georgia Blue Grass. Special feature attractions for the fair on Monday include the Kingston g District Old Time Fiddlers at 2:00p.m. and the Horse Drawing Contest at 7:00p.m. Tuesday boasts Randy Ladoucer of the NHL Hartford Whalers leading the parade at 2:00p.m. and then Monster Truck Mania at Z:30p.m. The Wednesday evening grandstand show features The Kendalls-Nashville's favorite father and daughter duo at 7:00 p.m. and 9:00p.m. An new addition to this year's line up is a cultural and native dance demonstration by the Mohawk Indian Band of Deseronto.
