E K E E, f; YOUR COUNCIL AT WORK Bastard and South Burgess Due to dealing with a number of delegations Special Council meetings are scheduled to complete business in June. Since the North Leeds Lantern goes to press before those dates, any interesting tidâ€"bits will be published along with the summer items. At the June lst meeting, Sam Fleming, local representative for Leeds Grenville County Board of Education attended Council and fielded questions and comments from the Councillors. He promised to obtain specific information re: assessing the levy. Sam was thanked for his interesting and enlightening comments and for attending the meeting. Bruce McLennan of Harris Computer Systems made a presentation re: updating of our system. Brian Young, our consultant was present also. Following' this' the decision. was made for our Deputy Clerk Treasurer and,_ our consultant to View the Harris system in operation before final decisions are made. Presentations were also made by Ray Pinnesault of Rep Consulting and Technical Services and at the June 15 meeting by Mr.MacMillan of Miller Paving. The latter was concise, interesting and well illustrated with slides. Councillor Don Wills attended a full day workshop sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food at Spring Valley Hall on May 21, 1992. This dealt with land use protection and comments from this meeting have been forwarded to higher levels of Government. The Leeds Grenville Emergency Planning Coâ€" Ordinating Committee has agreed on a table- top communications exercise located in an area including Bastard and South Burgess. Plan are being made for this and. Reeve Howard French and Fire Chief Paul Ostrom are to be representatives to the meeting. A C oxnnxi'tt2e e consisting of the Department Heads will deal with the Muni01pa1 Accident Prevention Program. This program is mandatory as of 1991 and a requirement is that we have our own policy and procedure implemented. Two days have been scheduled in July for a workshop on this. Councillors Jane McCabe and Don Wills w i].l f o rIn a.n A<intirmi s1:r at:i\7e Committee to bring forth concerns of the Administrative Staff. On June 20, 1992, there will be a further meeting‘ of the Rideau Land Trust. Councillor Jane McCabe will attend from Council and Jim Barker from the L.A.C.A.C.. Jim reported that the previous meeting he attended was very informative, goals were set, much discussion vva s h.e lci arid considerable ground covered in the 8 hours. All Councillors are required to file reports on any conference, committee, or board meetings 'attended. Those copies of reports from the February Conference have been forwarded to the Ontario~Good Roads Association in Toronto. The Bicentennial Committee held its first meeting and is off to a good start. Hopefully you will be hearing much more about this in later columns. In the Roads Department as a result of our supplementary funding allocation receiVed, engineering plans have been requested for Sheldon’s Bridge and plans are being made for improvements to a section of the Burgess Road. (often referred to as "Portland Dump Road"). Perhaps you have noticed the spring stone and calcium chloride applications to the roads. Approximately 8000 tons of stone has been applied and over 150,000 litres of calcium chloride have been used. Roadside mowing is currently being done. Street sweeping in the Villages has been completed. Polar Power lines are to number the street light poles - thus making identification for repair purposes easier and service more efficient. We replied to a letter from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs ' re: "Open Government" and r'e c e i v e d a n acknowledgement of our letter and comments. At the waste disposal site efforts are being made to cut costs, preserve the sites, plan for the future and encourage recycling. The following steps have.been taken: 1) A new technique for JULY/AUGUST 1991 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN '5 TOWNSHIP OF BASTARD St SOUTH BURGESS recycling newspaper (shredding) has been tried. 2) A can crusher is on order. 3) Trees have been planted for a future buffering at both sites. 4) Glass is now being recycled by the attendants. 5) Compacting has been carried out which result in more room in our sites. 6) All the composters received have been sold and more are on order. The first Horseshoe Tournament was held on Friday evening June 5th. only).
