r l l l r call Samantha ELGIN & DISTRICT COâ€"OPERATIVE NURSERY SCHOOL Family and friends of the preschoolers attending the Nursery School will not soon forget the delightful exuberance and spontaneity demonstrated by the children at the Christmas concert put on at the school on December 22. The teachers did a great job of organizing the children and getting them to learn their lines and their places; but it was the unpredictable, unrehearsed touches that really stole the show. Their acting out of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" was truly hilarious! January has provided its share of memorable moments for the youngsters too. The study of "Snow, Sky, Air, Wind and Water" has been highlighted by a horse-drawn sleigh ride at Chant's Farm early in the month, and a "Cookie Cutter Paper Making" workshop presented by Art Noise of Kingston at the end of the month. If your preschooler would like to join the fun, give us a call at 359-5166. The Nursery School will shortly be conducting an assessment of the need for Before and After School Day Car: in the Elgin area. A survey will be distributed through South Crosby Public School within the next few weeks. If you are interested in Before and After School Day Care, we need you input. If you would like to fill out a survey but do not have a child attending public school, please call the Nursery School at 359â€"5166. We are particularly appealing to parents of pre-schoolers to consider whether or not they may need such a service in the next few years. Pius Larson RR#3 Elgin, Ont. Our service projects have included a Breast Selfâ€"Examination Clinic at the Rideau Medical Centre in October and monetary donations to two families that were victims of house fires before Christmas. We have recently donated money to the Railway Museum in Smiths Falls and will continue to support a scholarship at Rideau District High School. In October we hosted a Dinner Theatre at the Lions Hall in Elgin which turned out to be a money maker as well as a great social event. Our major ways and means project was the running of the lunch booth at the craft market at Rideau District High School. The members have been taking orders from Regal and this has also proven to be a successful venture. At each of our bi-monthly meetings, members are responsible for a cultural program. We have enjoyed hearing Sylvia Herlehy talk on her trip to China, Judy Pattinson on our fragile environment and what we can do to help, Lynne Evans on her Tole Painting with an added bonus of a display of her works. The members have created decorated grape vine wreaths to be used as table centre pieces at our lunch booth. At our recent January meeting, Doug Green showed slides of possible additions to our flower gardens in the spring. Socially, we have welcomed one of our sorority sisters, Gale Drysdale, from Ottawa, to a meeting and some members attended the Westport Merchants Fashion Show. Out potluck at Marta Roberts was a culinary success and our model meeting helped explain Beta Sigma Phi to Sheila Groenke, Chris Luscombe-Mills, Lorraine Porter and Marg Vandermeer. Lynne Evans opened her new home for our Christmas dinner, catered by Petals Pantry of Elgin. After a sumptuous meal, secret sister gifts were distributed by Barb Purdy and the givers' names were revealed and new names were drawn for next year. Some of our members also enjoyed travelling to Toronto to see "The Phantom of the Opera" in January.
