Honey-producing as an industry in Leeds county has evidently some to stay and grow. The fine exhibit made should prove an important fac- tor in educating the farmers up to a {pat appreciation of the worth of the uey little bee. Cleanliness and good management characterized the stock exhibit. and it was visited by a large number of ladies. Many old and new subscribers vie- ited the Be rter tent on Wednesday and Thur 'ay. Cheap John did a brisk business and was constantly surrounded bye throng of admirers. He claims to have been trained for the ministry. Mr. A. Dawson. of Brockville, ex- hibited and practically demonstrated the usefulness of a new kind of crank ump, manufactured at Picton. Ont. be water is raised through a tube by three bell-shaped rubbers attached to an endless chain. Drawing water by means of this pump is rapid and easy, and at the some time perfect immun- ity from frost is assured, as no water stays in the tube. The fine floral exhibit in the main building was from the conservatories of Mesdnmos Richard Kerr, and M. Blanchard. oi Greenbush, and R. E. Cornell, of Elbe Mills. The large increase in the art ex- hibit is suggestive of many things which we have not space here to enumerate. The 42nd Butt. bond. of Brookville. enlivened the proceedings of the last day with good music. Never were the arrangements at Forth’e better for the serving of meals than on Thursng last. immense crowd obtained all they wanted, and the best of everything, served up in good style and promptly by attentive and obliging waiters. H. 13.. Arnold’s display of hand oilâ€"pinnth American window shades, shown in the main building, were gr utly admired. Amongtlie most important of the new exhibitors in blooded stdck were, 111 Jerseys, G. W. Gardiner, Lyn, and J. E. Ruddick, Brockville; in llnletcins, Messrs. Dnvison, of Spring Valley, and Loucks, of Smith‘s Falls. The improvements made in the :driving track were favorably com- mented on by all. The train seivice on the B. 6r. W. was excellent. The fact that there we absolutely no drunkenness on the grounds during the fair is highly creditable to the members end'patrons. We question if the same can be said of any other county fair in Ontario. In the poultry bouSc Mr. F. L. Moore had a number of fine cages in which he will show his birds at the - other fairs oi the district. The list of prize-winners will be given in next week's issue of the Reporter. m...-... 4 . Nonâ€"x- ‘ Basalt-hint. As the Dominion Governmnt’s recent order-in~counci1, extending the close season for bass to June. :10 ll, becomeslookcd into more and limrt‘, the idea prevmls, says the it o tit'l‘. that a. job has been perpetrated in some one‘s interr-nt. The order has led to a great dull of dis- cussion among local anglers and al- most to a man they express them- selves as of the opinion that the new law was entirely unnecessary and that it will militate seriously against the practical side of business at. the vari- ous summer resorts. For instance take CberlestOn Luke which 11¢ long - been looked upon as an ideal ground for fly fishing during the early base season. The base spawn there much earlier than in the St. Lawrence and the same can probably be seid of most of the interior lakes. Under the old system of protection which allowed no angling until the 15th of June, the bans were pretty well taken care of but it afforded some chance for the fly fishermen before the fish separated and event to weed beds. By July, however, fly fishing is racticslly at an end. The practical side of the injury donetn fishing resorts lies in this fact as it will deter American visitors from making their annual visits at that time of the year. ..-._ .. __..”.....__ '00“ I... But Hr. The classes are open to boys from ourteen upwards. Small fees are cha ed, and the balanoeis made up by thee arity commission and private aub- acrtptlona, which have been most liberal. Mr. Beeant was engaged on no new book at present, he said, but was pi! a series of papers on Westminster, wh ch would occupy him for three years at least. An old acquaintance revived -wae that of Mr. George W. Cable, who first intro- duced the New Orleans Creoles to English readers in his delightful novels. It wae all the pleasant“ because I stood to him as a sort of literary godfather, having first introduced him to the public through a series of short sketches in The Sunday Picayune, of which i was at the time city editor. Mr. Cable has for man years rnnided in New England, of whic he is a native, but we spent an hour very agreeably m recalling memories of the Crescent. City in the early seventies. Ontario Li ve Stool. From present appearances, and in spite of the fact i at the Toronto Industrial and other C adieu exhibitions witl be held at the same time as the live stock competitions here, with prizes nearly equal in amount, it is likely that Ontario will be largely represented in attic, horses. sheep, swine and poultry at the World's Colombian Exhibition, and no less likely that the province will maintain in these'oinsees the high standard she has reached in 9.11 others. Mr. Henry Wade, secretary to Commissioner Awrey, return- ed here this week, having been for the past six weeks in Toronto completing the arrangements l-vr the live stock exhibit.
