D. McPhail, Noted Auctioneer, Passes CEYLON
Dougald Macphail, well known and highly respected resident of Grey County, passed from this life on Friday, Jan. 17. Mr. Macphail was in his 66th year, having been born in 1864 in the township of Proton, three and a half miles west of Hopeville. He was the eldest of the eleven children of Alexander Macphaii and his wife Jean Jack.
In 1880 he married Henrietta Campbell daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell. The young couple began farming near the old home. To them three children were born--Agnes, Gertha and Lilly.
Though a successful farmer Dougald Macphail as best known as an auctioneer. His knowledge of values. his understanding of human nature and his ready wit made him an out-standing auctioneer. He sold his first sale in 1897 and in the following 28 years conducted 1162 sales in Grey County.
A little over 25 years ago Mr. Macphail moved to a farm at the 6 corners near Ceylon, and four years ago, on account of failing health, sold his farm and moved to the village of Ceylon, where he died.
His personality was vivid and attractive and though quick to anger he was also quick to forgive. His out- look was broad, his insight keen, which made him a good counsellor to those who sought his advice and he was always a good neighbor and true friend. Poor health caused him to live a very quiet and restricted life in late months and for the last several weeks he was confined to bed. He was tenderly cared for by his wife and daughters and all that medical skill could do was done without avail.
The funeral on Sunday was largely attended in spite of the storm. The Rev. Mr. Scott of Flesherton conducted the brief service at the and the Rev. Mr. Stewart at the Presbyterian Hall in Priceville, previous the internment in Priceville cemetery.
