Description
In March of 1946, Order in council approved the construction of the dam and generating station. The flooding of Jay Lake, Big Duck Creek and a portion of the Aguasabon River. Blue Jay Lake levels were raised 21m to create Hayes Lake, a 680ha. headpond for the Aguasabon Generating station. A water tunnel, 1057m in length and 4.6 meters in diameter drops vertically 61m underground to the powerhouse on Lake Superior shore. Construction was completed in 1948, with costs totaling $12,755,000. From 1949 to 1974 annual power generation averaged 288 gigawatt hours. (1 gigawatt equals 1 million kilowatts) From 1939 to 1976 were about 19 million dollars.
