- Description
- The Port Arthur Duluth and Western Railway was simply known as the Pee Dee. The Thunder Bay Colonization Railway was incorporated on Feb.1,1883. The railway's aim to construct a railway from Prince Arthurs Landing to some point south of Arrow Lake, which turned out to be Gunflint Lake approx. 85 miles from Prince Arthurs Landing. This railway was originally constructed to open up the iron and silver mines of Western Ontario, however, it aided in the development of farming and logging in that area. The first locomotives were woodburning with wood being collected by homesteaders along the way. The P.D. was discontinued in 1938. Pictured in this black and white photo are the men dismantling the ties and rails. The rails were then recycled for ammunition for World WarII.
