Wednesday, Jan 3, 1990 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 5 Hockey video promotes sa Hockey teams across Ontario will soon receive an important gift in the mail: the "Smart Hockey" video promoting safe, clan hockey. The provincial government will provide $90,000 to mail the viileo to amateur hockcy teams wiih players 11 years and older. The announcemcnt was made at the Hockey Hall of\Fame by Ed Fulton, Parliamentary Assistant to Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recreation, Ken Black. "Smart Hockcy" features former National Hockcy League gval-scoring chanipion Mike Bossy, who ways most disabling hockey injurics occur after players hit their opponents from behind into the boards. Since 1981, more than 140 Ontario players have become permanently crippled with neck and spinal cord injurics after being hit head-first into the boards. "Smart Hockey" promotes clean, safe hockey and offers prevention tips to climinate these Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: {'m writing this Icitcr to you to complain about discrimination tovards students at the Imperial Restaurant. This has been going on since around September. The students are not allowed in the restaurant from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. unlcss they eat. During lunch hour if only one or two students eat and two other pcople are sitting at the same table if the restaurant fills up they must leave. On one occasion, a student was told leave without finishing his coffee because peo- pJ< came in. The people were told to sit down by a waitress before the people had time to move their ja kets. From 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. students can not sit in the restau- rant unless they have a ten dollar meal, This means it can not be ficuch fries or a hamburger. It doesn't feel right to the stu- dents that they can only sit in the restaurant for coffec when it is permitted but any body else can. There is a bunch of women that sil in the restaurant for one to two hours at a time when ever they wish and they can join table together without complaint. These people rarely cat any thing. If there is more than four students having coffee, they must all sit at the front tables right by the door. The coffee club ladies never are requested to sit there. We decided to write this letter because students and parents have both tried to talk to the owner but nothing helps. If any thing, things kcep getting worse. We hope this Ieuter will make the owner think about what she has been doing and may be become easier on the students. All she has been doing is making a fool of herself when she kicks her customers out. Concemed students and parents unnecessary injurics. "We are proud of our hockey heritage but recognize it can be a hivsh-risk sport," Fulton said. "The "Smart Hockey" video will help us reach our common goal of reducing injuries in hockey." The Canadian Sports Spine and Head Injurics Research Centre, which produced the video earlier this year, will handle its distribution. The Canadian Aimateur Hockcy Association, NHL Players' Association and the Ministry also provided financial support. The video will also be mailed to Ontario elementary and secondary schools, women's recreational hockey teams, cable and network tclevision and boards of education. "I would like to challenge players, coaches, teachers and parents to support Mike's message in the video," Fulton said. "We all must do our part to reinforce positive attitudes toward safety in hockey." fe, clean hockey "Smart Hockey" is part of the Ministry's long-tcrm strategy to reduce injurics in sports, recreation and fitness activities in Ontario. Mike Bossy played 10 seasons with the New York Islanders, winning four Stanley Cup championships, two goal-scoring titles and three Lady Byng trophies as the most gentlemanly player. He is 16th on the NHL's all-time points scoring list.
