Photo by Dave Chmara Shoeless suspect hides for hours By Dave Chmara The Schreiber OPP and Terrace Bay Police have been involved in two high speed chas- es involving stolen vehicles in as many weeks. On Friday, July 29, a suspi- cious vehicle was observed in the factory area. Terrace Bay Police went to investigate and upon see- ing the police the vehicle and its occupants fled the scene. The Terrace Bay Police chased the van, which was headed west, and also called in the Schreiber OPP for assistance. After a 54 km chase which reached speeds in excess of 140 km/h, the van was stopped and its four occupants were apprehended. The four were charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and ' failing to stop for police. One of the four pled guilty and the charges against the other three were dropped. The van was stolen in Caloden, which is south of Orangeville. Suspect hides in bush Last Wednesday, August 2, local police. were again involved in chasing persons who had pos- session of a stolen vehicle. At 12:10 p.m., an attendant at the Imperial Esso in Terrace Bay reported to the Schreiber OPP that two occupants in a white vehicle had stolen $25.50 of gas and were headed west. Police went to investigate and saw the vehicle on Highway 17 just east of Schreiber. The vehicle sped away from police who then gave chase. As police neared. the east entrance to Schreiber they saw the vehicle parked half on the highway and half on the shoulder of the road. Two suspects were seen run- ning for the bush and Schreiber OPP 'were able to apprehend one of the suspects, a young offender, while the other managed to escape. As the Marathon radio station, CFNO, and other interest groups were notified, police searched the bush. Terrace Bay Police were called in to assist with survcil- lance as were the Nipigon and Marathon OPP. Police found a pair of shoes in the vehicle and reasoned the escaped suspect was in his socks. At 9:30 p.m. that night, a citi- zen reported seeing the person described on CFNO at the gov- ernment dock at Hays Lake. Police went to the area but were unable to find the suspect. They felt he would try to use the railway to attempt an escape and the Canadian Pacific Police, who were already involved the the search, were notified.
