Of interest to domestics and employers The following article will be of interest to domestic workers and persons who employ domestics in their home. Regulations under the Employment Standards Act have been changed to _ provide improved working conditions for domestic workers in Ontario. When room, and board are included in calculating the mini- mum wage, the maximum value of a room if it is private is $21 per week and $10.50 per week if it is shared. The value of meals is $1.75 per meal to a maximum of $36 per week. These values may not be applied unless the room is occupied and the meals are received. Overtime pay must be paid at the rate of one and one-half times the regular rate of pay for each hour worked beyond 44 hours a week; or-if agreed time-off may be given at one and one-half hours for each hour worked. The time-off is to be taken at an agreed time during the next 12 weeks. Employees covered by these provisions are full-time domestics, nannies and full-time live-in sitters. Full-time domestics, nannies and full-time sitters are also enti- tled to two free periods each week; one of 36 consecutive hours and one of 12 consecutive hours. The two periods may be com- bined so as to give 48 consecutive hours off. Any time worked dur- ing a weekly free period is com- | pensated separately, at time and one-half and is not added to weekly hours for the purpose of calculating overtime. Employers must also supply full-time domestics, nannies and full-time live-in sitters with the following information in writing; regular hours of work; regular start and finish times and hourly rate of pay. Like all employers in Ontario, those who employ domestics must keep and fill records for gross pay, net pay and all deduc- tions and other information. Full-time domestics, nannies and full-time live-in sitters also have the basic rights under the Employment Standards Act. Employers should also know that anyone who employs a full- time domestic is required under Ontario law to register as an employer with the Workers' Compensation Board.
