Kimberly-Clark continued from page 1 representatives had been tied up in other activities in Thunder Bay since the aborted meeting and that Kimberly-Clark had not met with the union "since .I made the organizational changes."' As late as February, the com- pany was also proposing to the union that production at the Longlac sawmill be stepped up to seven days a week from five. In mid-March, however, it an- nounced the mill would close on May 15. Four salaried and 59 hourly-rated sawmill workers are being laid off, along with 38 woodlands employees who supply logs to the mill. Both the company and the union cited the 15 per cent softwood lumber duty on exports to the United States as a factor in the closure. Lavallet said the sawmill had cost $4.5 million since 1980 and the duty reduced its chances of making a profit. 'The forecasts for the future say that the lumber business is going to decline again and we simply can- not accept the drain on all the resources of our company that the sawmill is placing on us,"' he said in his announcement. News of the planned closure shocked the union and community leaders in Longlac. Reeve Renald Beaulieu said that the municipality plans to do everything possible to encourage another company or organization to take over. But New Democrat Gilles Pouliot, the provincial member for the area, said the situation surroun- ding the sawmill and its possible sale is "very unclear". Any potential sale- if an in- terested buyer could be found- would require a willing seller, he said. And, after talking with Lavallet, his impression was that "the company seems to be intent on mothballing the sawmill... You have to have a willing partner and Kimberly-Clark hasn't been Clear." Pouliot wants, the Ontario government to approach Kimberly- Clark and ask the company if it is willing to put the sawmill up for sale. '"We need some help from the premier," he said. a SR are FUN-DAMENTAL!
