- William Foulkes of Port Arthur ; 93 years old ; native of Wales, born 1879 ; sailor for 70 years ; began on square-riggers and schooners ; went to sea as cabin boy at age 11; became a mate and sailed to India, Africa, China ; treacherous Cape Horn ; have to choose your latitudes carefully ; meager fare, pound of beef or pork per day ; limejuice to ward off scurvy ; in 1904 signed on Lusitania as quartermaster ; lured to Great Lakes in 1908 ; began as wheelsman on paddle steamer ; became a tug boat captain in the Lakehead
