Description

Letter from Martha Dykes (a cousin) to James Pate, sent January 18, 1879. In the letter she discussed her school lessons, and how a girl named Miss Scott went skating and got sick and died. Jessie scott was staying with Martha through the summer. She discussed how the farm was doing and enclosed two new year cards (one with a quote and the other with a picture)

Watston, Jan 18, 1849
Dear James,
I was always going to write to you but time after time went past and I never got it done. I am in Standard V now and in practice and proportion in counting and have not much bother with my lessons now. Isabella is in Standard III and counting in division and multiplication. Miss Scott was out skateing on Monday the 6th along with a few young friends. She went into Mr King’s an was taken very unwell

and was not got home till Tuesday and died on Saturday. Jessie Scott was staying here through the summer she told me to remember her to you when I wrote. I have to thank you for the books when you sent us ad we like very well to read the chatterbox for 1878. William has good fun making us spell Grandmama’s Goodsoul’s Domestic pets A.B.C. We have always the same herd yet, and Elizabeth Maggie and Lizzy Ohare. We have not got a married ploughman now but have William Craig, John Alexander for men and James Wilson for boys.

Darling the black mere has been doing very well she is stopped squelling and kicking now. Jess and Kate are doing very well and the colt is a very braw beast now. We have got a beginning for our grey calves now we have two cows calved and two grey calves. This has been a very severe winter for the sheep and they have got a good deal of hay but we hope the worst will be past. We will be vvery glad to see you at Watston. Mama Isabella and William joins me in sending out best wishes to you not forgetting your papa, mama, and brothers and sisters.
