- Description
- The Parks Canada card incorrectly identifies this building as part of the Ukrainian Centre and Camp which was actually built in the 1950s on the north side of Dundas Street, by the Sixteen Mile Creek.
It is thought this building is the Proudfoot house which was located on the southwest corner of Fourth Line and Dundas Street, with the 1 Fourth Line street address, a village known as early as 1826 as Chalmer's Mills, later when John Proudfoot bought the mills and tavern and land in 1840 as Proudfoot's Hollow or Proudfoot Hollow, and also as the Sixteen Hollow.
A link to a 1962 photograph of the Proudfoot house on the Oakville Historical Society website is included in this record so you can compare the photographs. Town of Oakville Heritage Planner, Carolyn Van Sligtenhorst says, the photographs are "taken from a different end of the building. But you can see the one end has the same chimney with double stacks on top. And the round details in the gingerbread on the porch is the same. And they’re both clad in the same wood shingles with the same details in the wood cornice. Also, the style of porch with the sloped roof is pretty unique. And they’re both located at Fourth Line/Dundas from the records. So from my perspective it’s safe to say they’re the same building."

- In December 1971, January 1972, Parks Canada photographed those buildings that were 100 or more years old. This Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings was a Centennial Project.
The Trafalgar Township Historical Society has worked with Parks Canada and Library and Archives Canada to find these photographs in the area of Trafalgar Township and the city of Oakville, Ontario. The collection will grow as we have time to collect and prepare the images.
The TTHS is also sending the images to the Town of Oakville Heritage Planners to increase local availability and to ensure local preservation.
Each TTHS internet record will show the back of the identifying information card first. This is to prevent any errors in reading the handwritten address held up on a clipboard for each address - we have noted that sometimes the address number is illegible or incorrect.
At the top of each TTHS record, you will find "pages" to click on to view the various photographs.
All TTHS records in this collection can be found in one step by clicking on the "Groups" link on the right of your screen, "Parks Canada. Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings, 1970-1972. Trafalgar Township & Oakville." - Inscriptions
