Description
Charlie's Chuckwagon Restaurant and gas bar was located on the north side of Dundas Street near Fourth Line in Oakville. This photograph was taken sometime in the 1980's.

The restaurant was on land owned by the Ukrainian community on the east side of the Sixteen Mile Creek. It had been used as a children's camp for many years. The history of Ukrainian immigration to Canada started with mercenary soldiers coming to fight in the War of 1812, and from 1890 to about 1915, 180,000 people came from the Ukraine. The area of Dundas and the Sixteen still honours this heritage although the museum has moved into Toronto after a devastating fire and theft of the bronze gates and bronze statute of Taras Shevchenko from the park - this last in 2006. A newspaper article is linked here for your further information.

Charlie's Chuckwagon was owned and managed by Charlie and Muriel (Michie) Askin. Charlie also had a sign painting business based on Church Street in Oakville, and his skill can be seen in the restaurant sign. He painted truck and business logos normally although he also painted pictures for his own enjoyment.

The Askin family were early settlers in the area of Glenorchy, Agerton and Lisgar in Trafalgar Township.
