- Description
- This is a series of 9 photographs of the farm machinery dealership and B-A gas station at Palermo in Trafalgar Township owned by W.D. Wise.
Sometime between 1940 and 1960, Oakville photographer Frederick Crouch took photographs of the property including an aerial shot and photographs of the store interior with employees and displayed machinery.
Main page image: a smaller pixel street view of Mr. Wise's property in Palermo.
The second image is an aerial view.
The 3rd image shows Bill Wise with a woman staff member and perhaps an Oliver sales rep on the shop floor with a "Standard 88 Goodison" tractor in the forefront.
The 4th photograph is the store interior showing the sales counter, salesperson unknown. Notice the wringer washing machine.
The 5th image shows Bill Wise painting the logo on the machine to satisfy Canada Customs requirement for some assembly in Canada.
The 6th photograph shows the store interior with several farm machines.
The 7th image features an Oliver Orchard 77 tractor.
The 8th image is another of the street view photograph with denser pixelation for a larger, clearer image. - Notes
- Palermo dates from 1835 when the first post office was established at the intersection of “the Dundas highway” and what is now Old Bronte Rd.
There are a number of websites dedicated to Oliver Goodison farm machinery which give a history of the partnership which came about because from the 1920's to the 1950's, Canada Customs required that farm machinery manufacturered in the United States had to have some components assembled in Canada.
The British-American Oil Company was founded by a Canadian in 1906. It was “a British Company with American standards in Canada”. The agent owned the outlet. - Inscriptions
- Signs on the building read, “Goodyear Tires”, “Myers Sprayers Sales and Service W. D. Wise”, “Oliver Authorized Sales Service”, “B-A Service Products” and over the door, “Goodison-Oliver Finest in Farm Machinery”.
