' Meeting to discuss local highway acccident rate Stretch east of Schreiber exceeds Provincial average for Highway 17 By Greg Huneault the News Although no specific date has been set, Ministry of Transporta- tion officials will be meeting shortly with local politicians to discuss possible means to lessen the accident rate on a local stretch of the TransCanada Highway. A joint letter, dated June 7,1988 and signed by Reeves George Ramsay of Terrace Bay and Mike Cosgrove of Schreiber, asks the Minister of Transporta- tion to examine the safety hazards of a five-kilometer portion of Highway 17. The section of Highway runs easterly from the Schreiber town- site and is marked "by several steep hills and sharp curves and presents a definite safety hazard," the letter notes. Figures obtained by the Schreiber detachment of the O.P.P. and included in the letter indicate that, in the past five years, there has been an average of 12 motor vehicle accidents annually on this section of the Highway. During that same period, there were four fatalities. Statistics of accidents prior to 1983 were not readily available, but the joint let- ter says there have been past deaths due to vehicle collisions. A letter signed by Dr. Keith Wilkes of Terrace Bay and dated May 17, 1988, noted his records as Coroner indicate three fatal motor vehicle accidents in which _ four people died. He suggested that a study be conducted to determine possible causes of the accidents to see if there is a relationship to road con- ditions within that area. In a letter sent last month to the local Reeves, the Minister of Transportation, Ed Fulton, noted the issue deserves serious atten- tion. : "The accident statistics noted in (the joint letter) are indeed a cause for concern," Fulton letter read. "My. Regional staff in Thunder Bay confirm that the accident rate for this particular section of highway excceds the provincial average for Highway bat Buse = He added that improvements to this section of the highway are scheduled on the latter part of a five-year program. Studies will determine areas of priority and costs involved, so the Reeves' concerns will be reviewed and compared with other proposals. A meeting of Regional staff of the Ministry of Transportation and local officials to discuss the issue is expected sometime in Septem- ber.
