Hello Everybody: I usually write this column while doing my laundry so I know its "clean" but as this has to be in a day earlier and its not my day to wash I can only hope this will also be "clean". I guess a lot of you nice folks are away on holidays. I sure hope you are having good times on vacation. Several of our residents are also away visiting family and friends, we welcomed Susan Gaulin back from a visit to Red Rock. This ole gal is not going to fly to the west coast of the United States or Alaska. .'ll stay on "Terra Firma" this year. Sorry to hear that our good friend Pam Jones is under the weather, I understand she has a pro- blem with her knee and by Helene Ballard ankle and is getting around : on crutches. NWO Women's Health Education receives $37,000 The Northwestern On- tario Women's Health Education Project (NWO W.H.E.P.), a three year demonstration project scheduled to conclude August 31, 1985, has been granted a ten month exten- sion by its funder, Health Promotion Directorate of Health and Welfare Canada, until June 30, 1986. Ms. Judi Vinni has been hired for the half-time co- ordinator's position for the project and will spend the ten, month period working with local and_ regional women who are attempting to form an organization to represent their interests in women's health in Nor- thwestern Ontario. Over the past three years of operation, W.H.E.P., a health promotion project, developed workshop kits on a range of health topics chosen by women in four- teen N.W. Ontario com- munities. The seventeen workshops have been presented in a total of twen- ty communities by the co- ordinators of the Project and later by community women who attended train- ing sessions in Thunder Bay this past year to prepare them. The health workshops provide information but emphasize group participa- tion so that women can share their knowledge, identify their needs and formulate their own solutions. Currently a core group of seven women, represen- ting thirty regional women involved with -- the W.H.E.P., are planning a conference to be held in Thunder Bay, October 18, 19, 20, 1985. '*The pur- pose of the ten month ex- tension,' say W.H.E.P. co-ordinators,~ "is to ensure that workshops are in Northwestern Ontario communities and being us- ed as a resource."'
