Would you be good enough to inform this office of the number; of tickets, up to 100, which | } you feel could be advantageously' distributed in your area, SPACE Cy SOUVENIR EXHIBITION NEXT SPRING Premier John Robarts an- nouced today that the Ontario Government will sponsor next Spring an exhibition of made- in-Ontario tourist souvenirs and handicraft, The Province will also hold a competition, open to both professional and amateur artist and designers, to encourage the production of new souvenirs characteristic of the province, The two-fold project was endorsed by the Hon, Bryan L, \Cathcart, Minister of Travel and Publicity and the Hon, Robert W. Macaulay, Minister of Economics and Development, Staging of the exhibition and of the competition will be the joint responsibility of the Departments of Travel and Publicity and Economics and De- velopment, Mr, Robarts said it arose from re- commendations made by the Tourist Industry Committee of the Ontario Economic Council, "Tourists visiting Ontario want souvenirs which are both made in, and characteristic of, our province," Mr, Robarts observed, "We have individuals 4nd companies capable of making such souvenirs, We certainly have a million dollar demand for them, If, in this way, we can help bring together innovator, manufacturer and merchandiser, we will provide greater impetus both to domestic employment and to our rapidly expanding tourist industry,' "Our visitors will not only pay more for, but they will certainly appreciate more, sou- venirs which are made by our own people and | which indentify and advertise our province through the very nature of their craftsmanship} added Mr, Cathcart, "A tourist souvenir, properly designed and properly merchandised, is one of the best possible advertisements for our province abroad and also means more jobs at home,* Mr. Macauley described the lack of Ontario- made souvenirs as a "major fabrication gap" vee emcees, Ln our multi-million-dollar industry. "We are more afi pleased with this récom- mendation of the Tourist In- dustry Committee and intend to give it every support," he said.
