JUST 2 DAYS Northern Insights-- Clearcut falls short continued from page 5 The scriptwriters Clearcut either didn't grasp that funda- mental message in the book, or made no effort to bring it to the screen. The result is a hollow movie, full of horribly violent scenes--Arthur shooting out the brains of a police officer; Arthur stripping all the skin off the mill manager's leg-- sup- posedly to "teach others like him that if they kill Indians with their poisons, they'll get skinned for it." Violence like that gives the movie an "R" rating, but con- tributes little to our under- standing of Arthur. The vio- lence in the book is the actions of Wisekedjak, the trickster who eventually had to be stopped. The violence of the movie tells us nothing, except perhaps to leave white audi- ences with the impression that Arthur is an insane psychopath. If financial gain was what the backers of Clearcut had in mind, they haven't pulled that off either, because it's ultimate- ly just a bad "B" movie. From what I've read, Clearcut didn't do well on the box office circuit, and has yet to return a profit to Telefilm Canada, the Ontario Film Development Corporation, First Choice (the cable movie channel) and it's other finan- cial backers. Perhaps if they had tried to bring the real story to the screen--the parable of Wiseked- jak-they would have made money because they would have had a much better story to tell
